Configure Road Bike as Tri Bike?

I purchased a Tri-bike but had it outfitted as a road bike since I’m new to the Tri world. So the bike has Tri semi-compact geometry w/ a road handlebar no aerobars and SRAM Rival shifters. IF in the future I want to switch over to full aerobars (not clip-ons), how do I do that? and is that expensive??

Thanks All!

Shouldn’t be too expensive. Your aero bars should be configured to accept the bar end shifters. You just need the base bar, bar end shifters, brake levers and their cables. Make sure you get the right speed index shifter to match your cassette (obvious, but I’ve seen if done!)

You will have a few choices on the base bar.

  • Integrated or one that required the road stem. Would strongly recommend that you do not go for an integrated bar unless you are absolutely sure of your bike fit on this and perhaps future bikes. The stem will allow you to adjust the cockpit length and also the height since you can get stems with different angles.

  • Drop base bar or flat. some base bars are angled so that they drop on either side so that event when sitting up, you are a little more aero. I’m not to big a fan the angled ones, if you use a TT bike then you should be able to ride on the bars for 99% of the time. The times when you are sitting up should only be climbing (above 5%) and technical descents where the technical nature of the descent is the speed limiting factor taking any aero considerations out of the equation.
