First tri (Olympic) of the season is this Sunday and the predicted high is 95 with 68% humidity. I’ve done most of my training in 60-70 degree weather. Any suggestions on how to handle the conditions will be greatly appreciated. I have a feeling that I will die on the run.
slow down is all!
Consider running with a hat, and putting ice in it.
Dump cold water on your head at run aid stations (but miss your shoes).
If you race on heart rate, don’t exceed your race heart rate early even though your speed will be slower (may not be relevant or useful if your first Oly).
Wear light colors.
Don’t be tempted to wear an aero (non-vent) helmet, unless you are particularly fast.
Sunscreen.
Good luck!
Thanks guys. Hadn’t thought about the hat/ice. Good idea!!
i have a huge problem with the heat.
-i wear a white non aero helmet (color probably makes little difference here but every bit helps)
-white 2xu tri top
-grey forza tri shorts- huge difference in heat between black and grey
-desoto arm coolers, mostly for soaking up the sweat from my face
dump cold water on your back or head every aid station. put ice your giblets.
Since no one else has stated the obvious yet, hydrate. Ensure you are topped off well race morning.
Repeat the following mantra…
The sooner I get done the sooner I can get out of this inferno.
stay away from alcohol for starters but I am sure you know this.
i ran a marathon after training in 50/60 degree weather and on race day it was 75degrees.
the heat definitely got to me but I also unfortunately got a fever/cold two days prior to the race.
nonetheless, I learned a lot about hydration.
-
wear a mesh hat
-
hydrate often
-
use low cal energy drinks like G2
-
use an oil free/waterproof sunblock so that sweating won’t ruin your cover.
-
LISTEN- you have to listen to your body. Just try to breathe, keep your focus as energy fades and take a breather if you need to.
-
Stay strong, you can do it.
Good luck. You will be fine.

I used EFS last year and on my long rides with good success. Was going to carry 24 oz EFS and 20 oz water. Then use some EFS liquid shot prior to the run. Why low cal?
