Concept 2 Rowing Ergometer: Anybody?

After I injured my back in a parachuting accident nearly 20 years ago I used a rowing machine and it helped a lot. I am thinking of buying the new Concept 2 Rowing Ergometer. Anyody have any experiences with the newer version?

we(crew) have a whole bunch of the new ones.
they’re still painful, and they still hurt just as much as the old ones. nicer, though. smoother resistance. better job at storing workouts. lets you see power application during the stroke, which is wicked helpful. can race a paceboat. even better, you can store all of your workouts onto a little card. that’s more helpful for us as a team, but in any case, it will store all of your workouts for you, let you store favorites, etc.
i don’t know of how to hook it to a computer, but there must be some way. it seems to have a place to store heartrate in intervals, but it hasn’t been picking up my polar unit, so i don’t know if there’s something i have to turn on for that or not. i don’t really prefer the new handle any over the old.

oh, they’re also quiter. and if you want any fun workouts on the erg, ask.
so functionally, the same as the old ones. just with some extra perks. seem to be working well. got one broken one out of twenty or so, but i’m sure it could be fixed.

crash-b’s international erg championship was this past weekend…a heavyweight dude rowed a 5:39.6 2k (1:25 splits), absolutely sick. one of our lights went and rowed a 6:17 - considering he weighs in at 160, that’s absurd. i was watching over the internet - funniest kind of race to watch - went between shots of the rowers on ergs, not too exciting, and a screen with little boats representing the rowers moving across.

Have the Concept 2 ergometer with the HR transmitter and racing software. I use it a lot especially during the winter. Make a brick out of 10,000 meter row and then on the bike for 40K. It is a great workout. Made the million meter club a couple of years ago.

they now have Model D that came out last fall that looks interesting but mine does all I need.

At one time you could go on the rowing news group or Concept 2’s message boards and look for used ones.

Good Luck in NZ.

Thanks fal7!

The new model D erg is just as good as the model C… it’s really just the monitor that is vastly improved. And actually, I haven’t found the “ergonomic” handle to be all that comfortable.

I’d recommend you find a used model C in good condition and if you wanted, upgrade to the new monitor.

This thing is ony $850. That seems very reasonable to me.

I might just be in a different frame of mind. My old university and my current club are always looking to buy things in bulk and on the cheap, so we go for greater numbers of slightly used equipment, rather than fewer brand new models. We had the challenge of how to get the most people training at one time.

As a former competitive rower/current recreational, I, like most rowers, have a love/hate relationship with the erg. When it comes to limited resources, I’d always spend my money on my boat anyhow.

All that said, the erg is a great training tool and Concept II is a great company. You’ll do fine with whatever you buy.
