Comrades Marathon (2)

Just signed up for Comrades. Probably not going to help my tri times but WTF:) Anybody else doing Comrades? Now for the training…

Excellent. That is running history right there. Screw the tri times this is huge and I hope it goes as great as I can imagine it will be. I want full updates on training and a huge race report.

So jealous…What a great event. I have never done it, but I have read so much about it and have wanted to do it since Alberto Salazar won it years ago. I also love the three tiered medal system for finishers…something US marathons should consider. Good luck. And please post pics!!!

Awesome!

Comrades is on my endurance bucket list.

x2

Was signed up for 2011 but DNS due to date conflicts. Goddamit this thing should be at the end of the year! I am so pissed. One day I make it happen.

Largest participation ultra in the world. It’s huge in South Africa with TV coverage of the whole event.

If you have the time make sure you get down to Cape Town. Beautiful city. Drive the garden route from PE to CT.

It’s on my to do list! Some good tips on marathon talk podcast.

2013 for me. Means doing the first on an up year, but WTF.

uphill or downhill?

Up is easier on the legs and more popular (more entrants). 2012 is a down year.

Good for you. This event (was not a race for me, I was just participating) is definitely in the top five of my athletic life. It is both exotic (location, format, participants) and difficult (distance, surfaces, downhills). Time cutoff is pretty generous (even our fairly seriously injured athletes finished) but so are the opportunities to screw up. Some information you might find interesting is on the blog (www.trilife.org) - search for Comrades postings, especially for the later ones that provide overview of the race. Free advice - focus on downhill running (strength/stability and form) and include long and steep downhill sections in your periodic training that will force you to improve physiology and form. Also, nail all logistics (travel, accommodations, etc.). If you need someone to arrange/set up travel and explain some other in-country “dynamics”, I can connect you to a great resource. Good luck, it should be fun - training, logistics, race, and South Africa. Do not hesitate to spend more time in that country (but be careful).

good article from Amby Burfoot on running it,

it’s a real carnival of a race…

it’s a real carnival of a race…

Other than at US carnival marathons is running VERY hilly 87k sub 12h still an achievement. And the guys at the front are throwing down 5:30 miles.
