Computrainer- Upgrade Question

Can you update/upgrade the old “Nintendo” 2-D computrainer programs w/ the 3-D software/program without buying a whole new unit? I was thinking of buying a new computrainer and a friend of mine has an older version (PC1) he’s willing to sell but doesn’t have the 3D software. Thanks

Matt there are upgrades available, the price varies, depending on which model (load generator) you have.

Yes. You can. It’s 149.95 if you download it from their web site or $175 if you order the CD-ROM + Manual.

Which computrainer do you recommend? I’m going to be forced (this winter and next summer) into doing the majority of my training indoors. I think I recall that you said you do your at least one key bike workout on a trainer per week.

I’m trying to weigh the pros and cons of buying an old/used computrainer vs. springing for a new one.

Thanks Eric

Skip the software. Real men use just the handlebar unit.

Seriously though…I have gotten much better use of my CT once I stopped futzing around with the computer and the courses and all the wires and b.s. Design your workout, hop on the bike and just punch up the wattage you want on the handlebar unit. Put on some CDs or a movie if you need some company. I put a pair of powered computer speakers on a shelf and plug my iPod into them.

For example, a threshold workout might be 15 minutes of warmup by moving power from 150 up to 250 and back down 3-4 times. Then, set the thing on 240 and DO NOT STOP PEDALLING for 20 minutes. Set the power back to minimum for 2 minutes, and then do the 240 for another 20 minutes (of course, choose power appropriate to your fitness). You will wobble back to your sofa after one of these.

The neat thing about using the handlebar unit in ergometer mode is that it will hold the power constant even if you vary your cadence. If you start pedaling slower, it will increase the resistance, and vice versa. I have found that this feature has led me to naturally select my ideal cadence at various effort levels.

For longer rides, decide what power you want and go at it. On longer rides, I like to vary the power to keep things interesting. But again, every 10-15 minutes, just punch the buttons up or down and keep rolling.

Skip the software. You’ll be a better cyclist for it.

Teambz,

You’ll also need to get the hard ware to upgrade the handlebar console. It has a different chip. I did it about 13 months ago.

Ironjack

BZ,

You don’t need one, you are getting way to fast without it. In fact my suggestion is to drink heavily and eat as many chili-cheese fries as you can.
