Computrainer, Trainer tire, & press on force

My struggle to get the Conti Home Trainer Tire on my rim ended. The 5min spin in the dryer does, in fact, help with getting it on.

Now, however, it seems like I have to turn the knob quite a bit more on the Computrainer resistance unit to keep the wheel from slipping. I mean, tonight, I turned the knob QUITE a bit, and I was able to hold the flywheel, pull the back wheel and still have it slip. I backed it off some to what I thought was acceptable, but the calibration after a long warm up was still like 3.7x+.

Anyone else notice this? Anyone else seem to think that when you go from a regular old road tire to the trainer tire, that it requires more turns of the knob to keep it from slipping against the roller? Has anyone counted the number of knob turns from the point where the wheel first contacts the roller to a good and appropriate press on force using the Conti Home Trainer Tire?

this is really odd. i wonder if there has been some build up of something on your CT resistance roller.

The trainer tyre is definitely more tacky than a regular road tyre. I use a Bontrager Race hard case non-folding tyre as my trainer tyre with a CT, and for me, starting from a 1mm gap between roller and tyre, i turn the nob 3/4 turns and don’t get any tyre slip. My coastdown value is consistently in the 1.35 range.

I’ve used a continental hometrainer tyre before, and it is definitely more sticky and “smoother” in resistance at really high power values.

Agreed it is a pain to get the Conti Trainer Tire on but I have no issues with it slipping. Wait till you try to get it off:-). I don’t find that mine slips at all, sure I could make it slip with quick bursts but with normal riding regardless of wattage rarely slips. That being said when I ride a course like Lake Placid with it’s 17%+ grades at the end it might slip a bit but don’t know that this could be avoided. I didn’t find any issues with normal tires slipping either just the wear was too high.

What do you tire pressure do you normally run, I am normally around 110. I think that you may be running the resistance too high and compressing the tire a bit too much. For me the manual told me to calibrate to around 2 so I normally am in the 2:10 - 2:30 range though maybe due to your weight you need to go higher but I am 155lbs.

Yeah, I was right around there…110psi.

The chart on page 23 doesn’t account for LP’s 17%. Up to 15% Grade – Use 4.99lbs of Press-on Force.

Now that I’m rereading the manual, I suppose my problem is with the following:

“Turn the Rear Adjusting Knob located on the Hinge and adjust the Press-On Force until, while holding the Flywheel stationary with one hand and using the other hand to pull the tire across the friction roller, the tire no longer slips when reasonably strong force is applied.”

I’m not He-Man, but reasonably strong force is enough to make the tire almost slip always. I should probably be more mindful, and consider the charts on page 23 more instead.

Still not happy about a flat tube… >:-/

Try cleaning the friction roller and the tire with alcohol. If these components get dirty or a little greasy, your tire slips a lot.

Still not happy about a flat tube… >:-/
If it makes you feel better, I popped a number of tubes, three if memory serves. I was going to give up until my last attempt using lots of sudsy water, it worked great and now I’m very happy with the tire.

Any idea why they were blowing out? I checked the inside of it tonight when I was changing out the tube, and there was zilch, zip, zero, nada, nothing. It held up tonight. No issues now … so far … !

I think the tube gets pinched somehow by the bead of the tire, mine would often blow after maybe 20 mins of riding. The soap water aloowed it to inflate without pinching. without it, the tire would be out of round in spots

Tires have a mold release agent is somewhat slippery. It is important to clean this off thoroughly before you put the bike with tire on the CompuTrainer. And clean the tire before each use on the CompuTrainer. I use the Tacx Trainer Tire 700c with my CompuTrainer and it has been flawless.
