Computrainer or Powercrank?

Hello everyone
At this moment I’m looking to improve my power and speed on my bike. my bike has an Ergomo power meter but I’m looking to get a Computrainer or Powercrank and cant make my choice. I could probable push my finances and get both but is a lot of $$$$$, but I would like to get your personal experience with these devices and advice ?
Please help
Thanks

So you have an ergomo and can’t get faster? Rethink your training execution more tech junk will not make you any faster or fitter! If that money is burning a hole in your pocket try a local coach, one who will work with you and check your form ect…

+1 for a coach.

Why would you need a computrainer if you have a power meter? Throw that bike on the trainer and you have everything but 3d and the constant load generator. I’m not saying your need powercranks either but it seems the computrainer would be redundant.

Sooooo exactly how does having an ergomo have anything to do with him wanted to get faster. The computrainer is a great tool especially for the winter at least in iowa. The other great thing about the computrainer is it forces you to pedal the whole time while on the bike. I notice a lot when im out biking with other people now that people coast a ton and i keep spinning because of the computrainer.

Maybe he already has a coach anyways that doesn’t really help with the question.

Im surely not bringing up the powercranks debate again. If you want to help you cycling i would pick a CT over powercranks anyday.

Since you already have an ergomo you can train with Power, so the only advantage the CT offers over any other trainer is spinscan and the motivation of the screen courses. PC’s do something you can’t get anywhere else and for most they get much bigger improvement with that one tool than they will see with other devices or changes. And, the PC’s come with a 90 day moneyback guarantee, so they are almost risk free. So, as regards your specific question, to me PowerCranks will do the heavy lifting, making the big changes you need to get better whereas CT (through spinscan) allows for fine-tuning improvements. But, if I am wrong and they are not right for you send them back and get your moneyback and all you will be is set back a month or two in any other course you choose to take towards improvement.

Anyhow, my admittedly biased opinion.

what Frank said.

My training bike is on my computrainer with powercranks.

You get the same effect from doing all your spring training on a fixie…and it’s a hell of a lot cheaper

Yeah well i don’t ride in the winter here its not worth dealing with the weather so i ride the CT.

So far I really like The Ergometer mode since it maintain a constant load
.

Yeah i would recommend getting the erg+ software from cycling peaks.

It lets you make up workouts in 1/10 the time that it takes with notepad and you can do stuff that you could never write out in notepad such and rapidly increasing wattage, random wattage. Its pretty neat stuff.

neither.
get a whole 'nuther bike.

I only use my CT in Ergo mode. I set the wattage according to what my coach prescribes for a given workout and have at it. The nice thing about Ergo mode is that it forces you to maintain the set wattage - no cheating.

If I were you, I would get the powercranks, having used them for 4 years and also having posted my PB Half Ironman and Ironman times at the age of 40. If you have a huge hole being burned in your jeans with all that cash, and are thinking of both, just get the PC’s and take your wife/girlfriend/significant other for multiple times out to dinner, or getaway weekends. Having the support of your significant other will make you MUCH MUCH more faster than any toy

Neither.

Get a coach, benchmark, set the plan…then execute.

Another trinket is only going to distract you from the issue at hand.

But, if you like tossing away money, buy some PowerCranks…but by all means, put them on a dedicated bike.

Ugh, you make it sound like coaches are free, or that coaches will give you some guaranteed result. I don’t think either of those are true.

Neither are true for PowerCranks as well…

(sorry, you brought that one on yourself)

Wrong, PC’s give you a 90 day money back guarantee. You are either satisfied that the improvements that you are seeing are worth the money you spent or you will get your money back. While that is not a specific improvement guarantee (we don’t guaranteed a 40% power improvement in x amount of time, as some here think, although we tell people that many see such improvements within the first year), it is a pretty good one as product guarantees go.

Given that my tolerance for indoor riding is about 5 minutes, I would do anything but spend money on something I have to ride indoors. I also thing PCs help, but would never postulate on slowtwitch how much. I used to ride with an Ergomo as well and frankly, became tired of being a slave to the numbers.
Now I just ride a lot more than I used to do (about half PC and half normal crankarms) and amazingly enough I seem to be getting faster.
