CompuTrainer and Soreness You Know Where

Why is it that I can do a 3 hour road ride with little discomfort but put me on a CompuTrainer and after an hour I have significant discomfort in my perineal area? I know some of the reason is because on the road one is constantly changing and readjusting his position. Is there anything I can do to make my CompuTrainer sessions more enjoyable? If I could do all of my training outside I would but my long hours at work don’t permit me to do so. So what can I do to help alleviate the pain and suffering?

how bout a saddle cover? I found the QR definitely made a difference while riding the CT.

Or a new saddle might help. I put an Arione saddle on my bike and have since ditched the QR cover.

Dear Rooster Man,

Ideas for you in no specific order:

-Better shorts like PI Heliarch or Micro Sensor

-CHAMOIS CREME LIKE ASSOS OR CHAMOIS BUTTER

-saddle could be too high (i know you’ve probably changes your position 143 more times since we last spoke)

-Lydocaine

Peace out my friend!

142 position changes, soon to be 143, but one thing that has remained constant is the saddle height from our initial fit session. I’m thinking about maybe dropping the height down a hair. I just put a QR saddle cover on and not much of a noticable difference. I also just started using Assos chamois cream and I am pondering dishing out some $$$ for a high-end pair of cycling shorts. So you recommend PI Microsensor?

Looking forward to Clermont in July! See you then. That is if my shoulder gets better.

yep check your saddle height and overall bike fit. Also try some chamois creme…the assos seems to be the best in my book. After that ya just have to change positions in the saddle while riding the computrainer.

yeah exactly, if you put on the saddle cover then a reduction in saddle height is suggested. try the new PI shorts wit the Red Chamois. EZ and I love them and she is very picky. the camp in clermont in july is going to be great. lots of training and lots of good info to come your way. i won’t take up too much time as i know you have to go readjust your position. see you at mad beach!!hahahahaaha

I can ride on the road for hours on end…but the rigidity of sitting on the CT kills my ass . Don’t know why also ?

some thoughts and not anything proven.

-when we ride on the road we are in and out of saddle more.

-when we ride hard, ie. intervals or races our butts are elevated a bit due to harder pushing down

-are your CT workouts easier in intensity and if so there is more pressure on the groin area?

-THE MENTAL ASPECT: are you thinking about it more on the CT as you don’t have all the other external influences as you do on the road.

just some thoughts. gotta get some sleep. group ride @ 6AM! oh yeah!

Thanks LeeZee

My CT seesions are definitely more intense and harder. Mental aspect is a good point , thanks.

I moved my seat forward and lowered the seat height. These two slight changes made a huge difference! I had some serious CT discomfort after 1.5 hrs and now I can go 2.5+ with no problems. In addition, try standing every 20 min. or so. If you stay in your areo bars it creates a lot of pressure.

Good luck!

I think you mean “very discriminating”.

I have logged a lot of time on the CT, its not the CT but indoor riding generally. Here are some suggestions

a) its constant pedalling thus constant pressure, there is no coasting, stopages, descents etc. Which means you stay in one position for much longer than you do while on the road. I think this is the main issue. The solution my previous coach gave me was to take short breaks on the longer session (for me it use to be anything over 2hrs) or do a few standing drills within each hour.

b) check the bike is level while on the trainer. When I set up any bike on the trainer/CT I always use a leveler b/c if it is not level you will experience soreness. This is much more evident with a 650 than 700c wheels

If you are relatively comfortable while riding outside for 3 hours then likely there is nothing wrong with your bike set up so best leave that alone.

Hope this helps
