How do you delete items in the system configuration start up items?

Is there a good forum to ask computer stuff?

Mac? PC? Operating System?

win 98se, I want to delete items that I don’t want to start so I can select ‘normal’ startup.

Two ways -

If it’s a startup program in the “Startup” Folder on your Start menu, you can delete it there and it won’t be invoked upon startup.

If it’s a program that runs in the background, you’ll need to go to Start/Run and type in “msconfig” and on one of the tabs you can select/deselect which programs you want to invoke upon startup. That should do it.

I think he, and I, would like to just get rid of lots of them–stuff that gets added by spyware, etc, rather than just “not invoke” them. Any ideas on that? Thanks.

Thanks, I actually do have them ‘deselected’ in msconfig. What I really want though, is to delete them completely from that startup list so I don’t have to ‘deselect’ them.

Any ideas?

If you’ve already deselected them, then I’m presuming you’re sophisticated enough to to attempt remove them via add/remove programs in control panel (its been awhile since i’ve used 98SE, so I may be speaking erroneously from XP perspective).

If they are listed, then you can remove them from there. However, if they aren’t, and are integrated into other applications, such as spyware bundled with filesharing software, there’s not much you can do.

Could you be more specific as to what it is you want removed?

I don’t want to remove the program itself, I just want to remove the command line to start it up in the ‘system configuration’ box.

I might be a little out of my depth, but I don’t believe that is possible. Basically, the parent program, when installed, installs a series of registry entries which govern what programs are run and with what options.

Removing the registry entries for the programs in question might do it, but screwing around with registry entries is typically a good way to get a catastrophic crash or BSD. Better to probably just leave the program there but dormant.

Thanks, you may be right. There may be a way to do it, but who knows…

Some programs will allow you to set this behavior in the options of the software. Is this software you paid for or freeware? Since you want to keep it installed I am assuming it is of some use but you just don’t want it to load unless you need it? Without knowing the specific software you are using it is tough to say but I would look in the options or consult the make of the software to see if it is in the knowledge base or search user forums for the correct registry entry. Does it put an icon in the system tray when it loads? If so, try to right click that icon to see if there are options there.
