Computer issues-advice needed

Okay,
so I have an HP computer that I bought in 2005. I have had great success with it, but had my computer crash 3 months ago. I thought I was rebooting it, but actually wiped my whole computer clean. It then went back to square one (like it was brand new) and I had to reload EVERYTHING. I was pissed but dealt with it. However, I am finding that my computer is acting buggy and sometimes it freezes up. I feel like it is in worse shape now than when it was loaded with all of my settings.

So, should I buy a new hard drive only, and upgrade a processor (I have no idea what I actually have at the moment) or should I buy a whole new tower?

Also, I know some people love macs, but I am a teacher, and I don’t know if it would convert to what I use in school-that is my primary concern.

Is vista really crappy like everyone says it is?

I am not a gamer, so that is not a concern of mine. I use it for grad school (typing papers) surfing internet, pictures, music and sometimes movies.

Thanks!

I don’t really see the point in upgrading a 4 year old computer when you could probably get something for $500 that would meet your needs. Heck, even a cheap laptop might be more useful.

Sounds like you are in school as well as teaching – often times you can get a pretty sweet deal with a student discount, have you looked into that?

Macs are easy, and you can get Microsoft Office for Mac which will let you do Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc with no compatibility problems for school. Macs are more expensive, however, so if you’re on a budget you might want to stick to a PC. That said, I think Apple does a teacher/student discount, and once you go to a Mac, you’ll likely never go back to a PC because they are much more user friendly and seem to be much more stable. I’ve been on Mac for 6 or 7 years and never had a crash or other issue with them that wasn’t cause by my own stupidity (dropped my laptop off the desk once).

Good luck.

Yeah for normal use you can get a desktop or laptop for around $500 or 600. If you use vista just get at least 3 gigs of ram and a core duo processor at 2 GHz or up. I would avoid 64bit versions of Vista (you want 32 bit).

Also as a teacher you might want to call a place like dell because I’m pretty sure there is a good discount. I know for microsoft software like word etc the academic discount is significant.

For most people OpenOffice (free) is equal to Microsoft office. It is available on both Windows and Mac.

You can save your documents in MS format, so no problems there.

Forgot to mention both Dell and Lenovo have outlet website that offers substantial discount. Lenovo’s have plain overstock and open box system (not refurb). Also there you can find an XP system.
