Computer and HED3 wheels

I want to get a computer to put on my tri bike but I am going to use HED3 wheels to race. What do people do to use a computer with these wheels? I know you can get special cateye magnets but I guess you would have to glue it on. I don’t want to have a magnet permanently attached to my wheel but is there another way? Thanks!

I put a small piece of electrical tape on the wheel (after figuring out the best location) then glue the magnet to the back of the tape. Removeable and its never fallen off.

i take a piece of black duct tape and put a spoke magnet on/thru it. the kind that has a screw on back. i then use the tape to cover the valve stem hole. i can peel it back to get a crack pipe in and inflate the tire. it will last for some time. i only use the HED3 for race/race prep so the tape lasts for long enough.
eventually i planned to get a small rare earth magnet and glue it in the valve stem hole so that it was flush with the surface and small enough not to interfere with the valve stem. someone posted a site for various size/shape rare earth magnets before. i think it was this one http://www.rare-earth-magnets.com/SearchResult-CategoryID-34.html

good luck

A simple piece of double sided tape. Holds the magnet perfectly, and is easily removed without damage or alot of work. Never had one fall off.

I can try to post a pic when I’m home, but I broke open the Polar spoke magnet (basically removed the magnet from the plastic). I then filed a tiny groove in the magnet (the size of speed tie). I put the magnet on a very small, very thin piece of neoprene (so the magnet isn’t actually touching the carbon) and then used the tie to fasten it to the wheel.

It sounds complicated but it took 10 minutes. It works perfectly, didn’t damage the wheel, is removable, and hasn’t budged in 3 years.

I run the HED3 wheels too. One benefit of the Garmin GPS - no need for a wheel magnet. If you haven’t bought anything yet you might consider picking up a Forerunner 305, which you could use for running and biking too.

I just epoxy a small rare earth magnet right to the carbon inside the valve opening.
It’s strong enough that your computer pickup reads it right through the carbon, plus
you don’t have any ugly tape on your wheels.
Pretty much everyone will want a magnet on their front wheel, so I don’t think it really
takes away from the value of the wheel.

I used a dab of clear RTV silicone (the kind that you use to caulk your tub with) to clue the magnet on. I then put one wrap of black electrical tape over it for added security and to smooth out the profile. When I sold the wheel, the magnet and silicone popped right off without leaving a mark on the wheel.

What size/pull force magent do you use?

I’ve glued a neodym-supermagnet into the back of the valve hole. It’s strong enough to act through the carbon rim backside.

what size magnet did you order?

I’ve been designing a valve mounted magnet, specifically so it can be used on any wheel (spoked, trispoke, or disc). It can be removed w/o tools (in case you get a flat). Right now I’m using a 2lb. pull rare earth magnet…seems to work well, but I may upgrade it to 4lb 50series.

PM me, and I’d be glad to send you one so I can get some feedback on the design.

Contact Hed. They sell small Earth Magnets to put into the valve stem cutout. Glue it in there and it will work like a charm.

This one S-10-01-N.

Its similar to a 5 cent coin.

electrical tape a magnet to the wheel.

Clear packing tape and a magnet from the hardware store is my vote.
