Compression question (1)

So there is a lot of talk about compression gear for racing, and then recovering.
I have a question about recovery tights. I know a lot about them and this is more of a medical question.
So my grandpa can’t really walk and he usually sits around in his chair all day. Besides the usual go to the porch, or bathroom. He is pretty much sittin in the chair.
He had a blood clot in his leg that traveled to his heart and then up to his brain givin him a small stroke. So I thought about recovery tights.
Do you think that a pair of recovery tights would help keep blood flowing, and possibly help prevent another blood clot or not? I know the tights are designed to help get fresh blood flowing to the lower parts of the legs and blah blah blah. So should I possibly get him a pair or would it not be worth it really? Any info would be helpful.

Cheers,
Luke

This is actually why compression stockings were invented–to improve circulation and prevent clots. Our hospital just went from the tights to stockings because the medical literature suggests there isn’t much benefit in the tights over the stockings. The alternative in the hospital is pneumatic stockings that compress at intervals to stimulate blood flow. Actually, the medical stockings will probably cost less than those marketed to triathletes. Fit, however, is all important and you should get these through the physician who is treating him.

If he’s got clots going from his legs all the way to his brain, he’s got some pretty serious heart pathology. You sure about that?

If your grandfather has a deep vein thrombosis risk, he really should have a talk with a cardiologist who would likely recommend some anticoagulation therapy to prevent the clots from forming in the first place, and may even recommend the placement of a vena cava filter (a little metal basket that breaks up large clots into smaller clots as they travel from the legs to the heart.)
.

You’re right, of course, clots from the legs would go up the IVC to the right heart and out to the lungs. Strokes are usually from clots in the heart or plaque in the carotids. If he isn’t on some kind of anticoagulation now already, it’s because he was felt to be at too great a risk of complications.
For the OP, You have to have some faith in our healthcare system. If he left the hospital after a stroke, all that has been looked into. Talk to his doctor.

He has a hole in his heart that caused the clot to skip going through the lungs and just kept traveling upwards. Otherwise, yes it would have gone into his lungs, but it didn’t.

As for having faith in the healthcare system, I do have faith in it this question was purely just me pondering the idea about recovery tights.

I love my Skinz for recovery and travel. I fly a lot for work and I can tell a difference when I wear them and don’t after long trips.

shop around for the socks, most places sell them for $150 ish, but they buy them from places like the orthotic group for $15 to 20, a huge mark up!, it can be veryyyyyy hard to get them on, socks are easier than stockings (yes they have mens stockings) you need to measure his calf circumfrince etc to get the right sizing ordered, also ask his doc what compression he needs, ie 15 or 20?? may be 22?.
If you need help let me know and i maybe able to get you a number for the company or ship some to you my self, not for $150
