Components matching

Hey guys
Very new to the sport of triathlon and know very little about bikes.
I just recently purchased a bike with sram red components. I also bought new tub wheelset but it comes with dura ace cassette. I dont know what the speed is (in fact i dont even know how count them)
Can I use the dura ace cassette while I use the sram red chain and rear deraluer? or do I need to have everything in sram?
what if I have the different type of sram components, can I use them with sram red?

It’s pretty easy to figure out how many speed your rear cassette is, simply count the amount of cogs that there are. There should also be an engraving on the cogs (at least the biggest and smallest) to tell you how many teeth you have. Eg, 12 (smallest) - 27 (biggest) is a common one.
When it comes to the red compatibility, components usually work best when matched with their peers. So, red works best with red. If you have a dura ace cassette, it will still work fine. It’s a really nice bit of kit, so give it a whirl and see how it goes. If it’s just not right for you, possibly swap out to a red cassette. I know that with TT shifters, dura ace only works with dura ace derailluers, not sure if that is the same with Red. Maybe a fellow ST’er can fill in any gaps.

hey
thanks for the info. Ill check out those numbers when I get home!

Assuming you have 10 speed dura ace, many would argue that dura ace cassettes shift better than Red regardless of what derailleur/shifter combo you’re running.

Worse case scenario is that you’ll need to learn how to switch cassettes out between your training wheels and your race wheels, and buy a few tools. Here’s a very thorough resource to get you started: http://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-help/cassette-and-freewheel-removal

I had dura ace on my tri bike, red on my road bike and several sets of wheels with either SRAM or shimano 10 spd cassettes, there is absolutely no problem interchanging the wheels/ cassettes fom bike to bike. In fact some people say their shimano drivetrain equipped bikes run smoother quiter with SRAM cassettes.

As for different type of components, you can mix drivetrain parts within a mfg. In other words you could have dura ace shifters, ultegra deraileurs and would be fine, or SRAM red mixed with force etc…
