Compatibility: Ultegra cassette/SRAM chain

The LBS just replaced my Shimano chain with a SRAM chain and it doesn’t seem to settle on the cogs very well when I backpedal to lube it. I would have preferred if they had replaced it with a Shimano chain. Is there any foundation to my concerns?

I’ve used SRAM chains and never had any problems.

I’ve currently got an SRAM chain on an ultegra cassette (on 2 bikes 8 speed and 9 speed) with no problems. If you are getting chain suck, that is a different problem. Read the recent article on this site about chains. You may also just need a standard der. adjustment.

I have a sram chain on a DA 8-speed cassette/ultegra hub wheel. No problems shifting with this setup.

I think that the SRAM chains are better. I use the SRAM PC-99 with my ultegra set-up, and it seems to last longer that the HG-93 that came on the bike. I’ve had no problems using them together. Same deal with my MTB using the SRAM PC-69 with XT cassettes and RaceFace chainrings.

I think Dan wrote a good piece about this a little while ago. Just a moment…ah! Here it is.

I use an SRAM 89 Road chain and have had no problems. I have Ultegra cassettes on both my training and race wheels. Did your LBS cut your chain to the right length? You may just need to take it back in and let them adjust your cable tension on your rear derailleur.

I’ve used sram for years with no problems, in fact they usually work better. However if your cogs were worn any new chain might cause problems.

based on what you describe, and what everyone else has said, i agree with trent: return it to the lbs and let them sort it out.
