Compatibility MTB and Road parts?

Would my long cage Deore deraileur work with 10 spd Ultegra on a CC bike? Just currious what the knowledge base says here. Should I even try?

CC bike? Maybe CX, as in cyclocross? Yes it will work.

Yeah I mean cyclocross, have you tried that? Would the indexing be accurate enough?

Indexing is done by the shifters… but I assume you mean is the Deore derailleur as precise as 105 and Ultegra, for example, and I can’t answer that since I have no experience with it. I would say that for very little money you can get a new, old stock, XT which would work perfectly and is not uncommon on CX bikes.

well I’ve seen a long cage DA on Kabush’s bike… not sure if he was running a mtn cassette or road though. Obviously it was 9 speed. Then again there are guys running road cassettes on their weight weenie mtn bikes so yeah, why not a road derailler on a mtn bike. Thinking one thing it might not have enough of is spring tension to keep the chain in place going over crazy bumps and such…

Yes, it will absolutely work - for the most part, a derailleur is a derailleur. It’s the actual shifter that determines how much it moves.

This is a common modification on touring road bikes that require bigger gearing, as a road derailleur’s cage is not long enough. You also see it often on cross bikes, because of the stronger return spring to work through the crud. I believe that Sara R also used an XTR mountain derailleur on her Cannondale at Kona, because of the bigger gearing on her cassette. Really, anything over a 27t on the back and you should think about putting on a mtb derailleur.

Yes, it will work. I have gone both ways (insert bad joke here) with road and mtn der’s and cassettes.

Something to consider though… If you are using a double or a 27 cassette (or smaller) it might me a good idea to use a mid-cage mtn der. (XT or XTR) The shifting performance will be better… If using a triple or 32-34 cassette, the normal long cage will be fine.
