I’m about to buy a new road bike and am leaning towards compact cranks (probably FSA) with the rest of the drivetrain Centaur or Ultegra. Is there any loss in shifting precision with the use of compact cranks? Would it be worth waiting for the Campy compact drivetrain to come out? Other things to consider about compact cranks? Thanks
There is a thread on them in here. Do a little search for it. Many of your questions will be answered there I am sure.
The word from Interbike is that Campy’s new Compact & FD combo is super nice. Bontrager is also coming up with a fancy-pants compact with outboard bearings (Like DA-10). Hold your pennies unless you have a big time hill-race coming up.
“Is there any loss in shifting precision with the use of compact cranks?”
Absolutely no loss with 9 sp. Can’t speak for the 10 sp.
I think he means up front. Or did you mean up front too, CG? Sorry… Anyway, there is a bit up front in my experience, which is why Campy is coming out with a new FD.

Sorry hit reply to the wrong message. PMP make some very nice compact cranks (DA10 like assembley).
Just to clear up what is probably an obvious assumption… we want to go to compact cranks so we can use smaller chain rings… right???
If you are already running a 130bc crank and want to try the small chainring concept both Vuelta and FSA make inners running from 38-44 and outter rings from 46 to 55. I’m running 48-38 rings and 11-23 cogs on my rain bike and will be converting to the 48-38 on my Dual. The Vuelta rings are about $25-$35 per ring. With the closer ratio rings I find I ride my middle-smaller cogs more. 31mph 48/11 95rpm.
