just a reminder: we have a database where you can post comments, good and bad, about bike retailers. that’s the proper place.

I seriously doubt that most people even know that “database” exists. If a retailer, particularly one who is extremely immersed in the ST forum, is behaving in very suspect fashion, shouldn’t your readers be warned? I would think you’d have more concern for your thousands of loyal readers. I say this because years ago I got suckered by someone who I thought was honest and credible because he was a very frequent ST poster. Yes, my bad, I should have known better.

You recently offered your assistance in “investigating” a possible doping issue. Perhaps you could put your investigative skills to work in order to determine if certain retailer bashing here is legit. Just a thought. Your site, your rules.

I still wanna know how the FCC is involved…

I actually find the posts more helpful. I generally forget there are other links on this site (or even other websites in the WWW) and come straight to ST when I get into the office each day. I like reading the threads in the general forum. They’re very helpful! Then again, it’s not my site…

You must have missed the exposed nipple - gone in the blink of an eye, but it was there.

“I seriously doubt that most people even know that “database” exists”

nevertheless, it is the most frequently trafficked place on slowtwitch, after the home page and the reader forum. we serve tens of thousands of page views every month on that retailer database. maybe that’s because i keep reminding all of our dear readers of this database every time this sort of thread pops up.

this database gets the traffic it does because of its utillity. let’s take you as an example. you live in the pacific northwest. so, let’s say you wanted to know what cervelo dealers in your area have F.I.S.T. certified fitters on staff. it took me 10 seconds to determine that there were 8 of them. how about felt dealers who also own a retul system? 5 in the country, none in your area. blueseventy wetsuits in the state of washington? who also sell t1 wetsuits? just one.

and if you go to that shop’s online entry we keep for you, you’ll note their hours of operation, who are the tri-specific folks work there, and you’ll see the results of 15 folks who’ve rated this shop across 10 parameters. the database is here.

bottom line: when we started the lavender room, we got a lot of complaining, because folks would say the same thing you just said: nobody knows that forum exists! well, after a lot of help from folks just like you, we are where we are today, where, when someone posts about republicans and global warming, the immediate answer is: lavender room!

please help me make that also be the default reply from all of you when trial by internet also pops up here on this forum.

That's WHY he created the database. He also posted in here when the database was created (it was stickied for a while), AND he posts a link each time it comes up in the "main" forum.

How much more notice do you need?

Yes, I understand. And **I **don’t need more notice. I’m talking more about the people who are perhaps newer to ST and those who don’t study the site extensively. I’m sure some people get on here and think “Boy Retailer X sure seems like a nice guy. He’s always posting nice, supportive comments (and some semi-erotic photos.) I think I’ll buy from him.” They just assume that because Retailer X is perhaps one of the top ten celebrities on ST he’s also honest and credible and follows through on his promises. It would be nice if those people could have more of a ST “warning.” Now, I agree with you that people are responsible for their own choices and if they do a certain amount of due diligence they could determine many of these things on their own, without forum threads devoted to retailers. I don’t understand why retailers can be “bashed” on the “database” but not the forums though. Aren’t both considered “trial by internet?” Here’s an idea, how about limiting the retailer comments to the lavender room? From what I can tell pretty much anything goes there . . .

 Heh, fair enough.

Maybe it’s time for the “Things to know” sticky and the FAQ’s to be updated to include some of these spiffy additions? Such as the training logs, retailer databases, coaching databases, fitter database, etc etc.

Because we ALL know that the first thing a n00b does is read the FAQ’s, right?
