out of curiosity, were you there? do you know for sure that the course was the same? i was under the impression that the run course might be different this year - not the roller coaster on dirt hills it has traditionally been. last year the swim was definitely long - but that’s only a couple of minutesif they got that squared away. i have a hard time believing that people were that much faster on the same course. and doing some quick research, chris stehula who raced both last year and this year, was 6 minutes faster this time around (2:02 vs 2:08). anyone have any insight?

Yes I was there, and participated. Didnt have a very good race time but I finished. The run was on pavement for the first mile where it turned off on to a gravel road and began a very brutal up and down to the turn around and back. The temps were about 90degrees towards the end of the race. Start time was at 7:30am and temps were much cooler at that time. I dont know why the times were that much better this year. I do know that they used GPS to mark the swim course.

Do either of you guys know if splits are going to be posted, and if so, where? Thanks.

I have done this race twice before - and if the course was the same, it could have been because of noticeably cooler temps. In the past, the “open” Olympic race was held on the first weekend in June. In Arizona, that makes a heck of a difference. It might have reached 90 for the high on Sunday - but I’m sure it wasn’t as hot at race time as it usually is in June. Just a thought.

i’m not trying to take anything away from anyone. i’m sure some guys had some great races out there, but i just cannot believe it was over the same course as in the past. cooler temperatures could make a small difference, but not of the magnitude that these results suggest. perhaps something was mismarked as both the bike and run are essentially out and back. maybe if they post some splits i’ll have a bit more insight.

looks like maybe i should be eating some crow. there is a difference of a few minutes on the swim compared to last year, but those guys were just really moving. for bean to ride :58+ on that course is awesome.

Ric Rosenkranz stated that at least one of the athletes who was at the race will be looking at an olympic team opportunity.

Don’t know if the course was mismarked but it sure was tough. The bike was on the shoulder of the Highway for most of the course and surface was terrible. I can imagine even faster times if the bike was on the road not on shoulder. Don’t know if the run was short but it was brutal, two big hills on pavement then going to the rollercoaster off-road section. I just remember the Stanford guy who flew by me on the bike lying on the side of the run course and delerious. The top guy, Bean, was a pro though so he didn’t count in the overall standings, but he sure tore the course apart. There were a couple of guys on our team (Hawaii) who will probably head to the OTC this year as well. The only bad part was the race organization. The RD was nice guy, but there were some serious communication problems between him and his staff. The bike course either needed to be off the shoulder or there needed to be more officials as most people not in the first wave were riding in violation and skipping the rough shoulder. I don’t know how many people I passed on the right to avoid riding over the scary rumble strip out and around the riders on the road and back across the rumble strip onto the crappy and slow shoulder… Overall it was fun though, just a little crazy. I thought I’d be used to the heat from Hawaii, but I still ended up throwing up on the course…
