I just read that Texas A&M has offered the MSU (my team) Defensive Coordinator between $600k and $750k per year for the same position. He makes $240k a year right now at MSU.
Wow, I understand (sort of) why a head coach gets paid so much. But that seems like a crazy salary discrepancy. MSU had a great defense the last 2 years, but damn.
Thanks Coach Narduzzi. Go get that money. I know I would.
Nice to see A&M acclimating to the $EC so quickly.
Narduzzi already has a raise approved at MSU. No number has been released, but it certainly won’t be 750k.
MSU returns most of it’s defense next year and should be very good again. I think he stays and waits for a HC opportunity instead of starting over at A&M.
It’s a lot of money for a DC, but I have to believe Michigan is getting their $750k worth with Matteson.
The guy that left at A & M (DeRuyter) was making $550k. He is making a base of $650k at Fresno St. as their new head coach.
<Fresno State athletic director Thomas Boeh said at a news conference Wednesday that DeRuyter would earn a $650,000 base salary, the same as Hill. DeRuyter’s five-year contract, though, includes incentives that could boost his pay to $1 million annually.
After coming to A&M from Air Force, DeRuyter was in the first year of a two-year contract.
He was scheduled to make $550,000 for the 2011-12 academic year after the A&M Board of Regents voted this summer to give him a $125,000 raise.
DeRuyter, who specializes in an aggressive, 3-4 defensive scheme, was a candidate to be on Sumlin’s staff even though A&M struggled mightily on defense for much of the season.
A&M, with a game to play, is ranked 113th nationally in pass defense.>
Tamu has plenty of money in the athletic dept to throw around…no big deal these days…monopoly money
.
these tax payer dollars could be used to hire more police, fire and teachers - but then folks would really complain

Coaches aren’t paid with tax dollars.
Remember, coordinators are the ones who put in the massive hours. Head coaches in most instances are field generals, they delegate. Spurrier has an offensive coordinator, but he still calls the offensive plays in so he is a bit old school in that sense. Not that head coaches don’t work b/c they do, but the coordinators are basically the NCO’s of the military.
Let me put it to you this way. My Auburn Tigers were a 5-5 team probably w/o Cam Newton. Instead they won it all. Without Gus Malzahn they would have been maybe a 7-3 team. Gus’s departure from Auburn is devastating not only to our immediate performance, but also to recruiting as we have already lost the #1 RB commit to Bama 48 hours after gus resigned!

What university is using tax dollars to pay coaches?

When we had Jackie Sherrill coaching for us, the joke was A&M stood for automobiles & money. Fortunately we were marginally smarter than SMU at the time.

Welcome to the big leagues, the SEC. TAM will have to compete with LSU, Bama, AU, and Arky for talent and wins. Dog eat dog. Cat eat dog. Cat eat elephant.
Public ones? I get your point, FB at colleges make money and have donors, but they also get public funds. I’d like to see independent accounting of some football programs. I suspect not all of them are in the black.
I can’t speak for all athletic departments, but most of the ones paying these big salaries are making money. MSU athletic budget is separate from the general fun. The revenues from football and basketball fund themselves and provide most of the funding for the other sports. In addition, the university general fund maintains all the concession and parking revenue from the sporting events.
As a graduate, a tuition paying parent and a Michigan taxpayer, I would have no problem giving Narduzzi a fat raise to keep him.
The NCAA publishes a report annually and for 2009 about 14 Div 1 football schools were in the black and like 22 in 2010.
Being in the black doens’t automatically make it okay. Whether they are tax dollars, donated dollars, or ticket sales…they are all coming from people’s pockets and using resources (time, space, and money) that could be applied in a different, more beneficial direction.
And the reason your boy Obama is going after the military jobs and not those of your sacred police, fire and teachers is what? What’s the difference between laying off cops and laying off soldiers? Obama cannot wait to lay off soldiers but budget cuts cannot allow cuts to touch firemen, cops or teachers. Look how eager he is to cut uniformed personnel in the military that protect us but not cops who protect us in our towns. What’s the difference? The military doesn’t have a union and doesn’t kick anything back to Obama… that and he thinks the military is evil and imperialist.

The military is Federally-funded. Cops are locally funded. Complain to your country/city/state government about funding for cops.
The military doesn’t have a union and doesn’t kick anything back to Obama
The military-industrial complex has fantastic union representation (UAW, AFGE, etc).
The top 3 contributors to my Congressman? BAE Systems, General Atomics, and General Dynamics.
Who’s screaming about Obama gutting the military? My Congressman. Don’t tell me the military has no monetary influence within our government.

Are you off your meds? WTF does this have to do with coaching salaries?
The military does not have a union. But police, firemen and teachers do. More Obama pandering and you know it.

Sorry to interrupt the Obama debate, but for anyone wondering, Narduzzi has said no thanks to A&M and will be returning to East Lansing.
Thanks for the update Thom. I just saw this in The News -
“With the success we’ve had as a football program, especially the last two years, people around the country have taken notice,” Narduzzi said in a statement. “So when provided a professional opportunity like Texas A&M, I owed it to my family to investigate it because my first obligation is to take care of my wife and children. The bottom line remains; however, that I’m very comfortable working for Mark Dantonio and Michigan State. The support from the top down is tremendous…”
Good for him and for us. Can’t say I would have done the same thing unless MSU made some nice increases and promises (IE - You are next in line when Coach D retires/goes to the NFL).
But - WTF is Edwin Baker doing by entering the draft?
And on the Obama topic - Please keep politics out of the college football discussions. Unless Obama is going to create an 8 team playoff (and only 1 team per conference is allowed in) nothing is going to change in the salary discrepancy debate.
