Doing 1st marathon this weekend in Dallas and the forecast is 30s and rainy. I have no issue with cold but running in the rain for 26 seems like some precaution should be take. Any suggestions for light and breathable rain-jacket are appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Shorts and singlet with arm warmers.
Wear a jacket and you get soaked anyway with sweat.
Body glide on all moving parts (clutch).
Mid 30’s and raining for me includes:
light-medium weight wool (still somewhat warm when wet) gloves
medium weight or fleece lined full length spandex like the Pearl elite series.
Form fitting long sleeve baselayer with a snug long sleeve running shirt over that.
sometimes thin armwarmers under the shirt(s).
If it is truly raining you will be soaked before 10k so a rain jacket is mostly pointless. Form fitting (non cotton) clothes will be warmest when wet.
35 degrees and sleeting is when I find a treadmill. Good luck.
Nipple covers?
My last marathon was 42 and rain all day. Manger fined with cheap gloves, a long sleeve t-tshirt, and shorts. I little chilly at the start but fine otherwise. Of the people running around me, id saw I was right in he middle of the clothing spectrum
My first marathon was in mid thirties, driving rain, and winds at a steady 10-15 gusting to 25. It was a memorable occasion to say the least!
I wore…
long socks
trail running shoes (gore tex lined and so semi waterproof)
mid weight running tights
running briefs with wind block panel
tech tshirt
tech fabric long sleeve running jacket that was breathable, but fairly windproof with a half length zipper to adjust for cooling if need be. (it wasn’t!)
running hat
gloves
I felt pretty good by mile 2 when I was warmed up… the gusting winds blowing the rain in my face were no fun, but after a while you just go to a warm spot in your brain and push through it. DEFINITELY bring some throwaway gear or the oh so fashionable trash bag jacket to the start line. The coldest part of your day by far will be waiting for the race to start. Also a good idea to have a complete change of warm clothes waiting at the finish line. I felt fine for the whole race but was almost instantly hypothermic as soon as I stopped moving and the cold wet wind hit me. I hope you have a great race!
I’ll be running this as well.
My biggest piece of advice is to leave warm, dry clothes at bag drop. I think you’ll be fine for the run. It’s easy to stay warm as long as you don’t plan on walking. But once you get across the finish line, get the wet clothes off as fast as possible and into something dry and warm. Start the warm liquids - tea, soup, ho cho, etc.
Good luck
Yeah, once you get done you have about 10 minutes to get into warm clothes before you devolve to a shivering shaking mess
.
I’d wear 8 items.
- Visor/hat (to keep rain off the face)
- Singlet
- Bandaids on the nips
- Shorts
- Socks
- Sneakers
- Bib
- thin gloves
( and lather up the BodyGlide)
Throw away long sleeve shirt to wear until start; Hat/visor; Light gloves; Singlet; Arm warmers; Shorts; Compression sleeves for calves; Socks; Shoes. Do not wear a jacket. You’ll regretted it after a couple of miles and will toss it another couple of miles later when you’re tired of carrying it.
Then have all sorts of dry warm things to wear when you finish. Basically replace everything you ran in during the marathon. Dry socks and shoes will go along way after finishing.
Thanks all for the great input!
Good luck to you too Nad, see you out there.
Thanks to all for the input; I meant to post right after the marathon, but I decided to rest from all things. That said, the suggestions were great and the best piece of advice was the warm dry clothes waiting for me! Lifesaver! It was <40degrees and poured the entire marathon. I wore a visor, a long-sleeve poly running shirt with an under-wicking shirt (probably could have done without this layer, but it didn’t hamper me at all), light gloves/mittens, shorts and normal running socks. I had a drop sweater and trashbag that I wore until the start and the advice about the gatorade/urination bottle was GOLD! I could pee while in the corral and no one knew.
Despite the cold and wet I beat my target time of 3:15 by 2 mins. Now that I’ve taken a few days off I am ready to get back in the swing of things. Thanks again to everyone for the suggestions- truly appreciated.
