If you’re riding below 25 for longer than 90 minutes, you should definatley invest in some cold weather shoes/boots. I find 90 minutes is aout the breaking point. The medal plate on standard road shoes is the culpirt and no amount of insultation is going to keep that away from the bottom of your feet. The “hot toes” pad is a good solution providing you have room in your shoes. “Winter” shoes/boots have a barrier b/w the plate and the inner sole.
Of course…IMO, the biggest reason for cold feet (above 25) is cutting off circulation with all the fluffy big socks. Keep it simple.
SealSkins (SealSkinz?) has some neoprene socks with a fleece lining that have kept my feet warm when skiing down in the teens and single-digit temperatures.
duct tape around the ankles is the traditional pacific northwest answer to the rain leakage issue. it works great, and provides another justification for shaving.
I am going to get booed here but, if you’re doing aerobic excercise you should stay away from anything that will hold sweat/moisture next to your foot. I would worry more about trying to keep your foot dry. There is nothing worse than stewing in your own sweat.
I wear wrightsock double layer crew socks. They are medium thin but I still need to loosen my shoe straps a little. With toe covers I’ve been comfy into the thirties.
You are wearing too many socks and cutting off blood flow. I used to work outdoors in temps as low as -40F. At most I would wear silk sock liners and thin wool socks( wool is sooo itchy). I had Red Wing work boots over that. I never had cold feet.
FoddSluts is all about training so you can eat whatever the hell you want. Post-race meals must be obscene. My good bud Yaneh and I coined the phrase many years ago… we have “FoodSluts” beanies from Erika, and you would not believe how many people stop me at events, races, shops etc and ask if I am AndyPants when I wear it AP
where can you get shoes like these. i didn’t know they made winter cycling boots. anyone tried these or another brand and where did you get them?
Popular brands are the usual suspects: Lake, North Wave, Sidi, Shitmanoa.
I live in another hemisphere (same planet), so I do not know where to obtain them at your end of the pond. The world largest cycling mailorder - afaik - is www.roseversand.de (Germany). They ship al over the world at reasonable prices. Select the Union Jack for language & in the quick search field enter the buzzword ‘winter shoes’. Prices vary from 90 euro to 250 euro. (I once referred a guy from Australia to roseversand.de, he saved almost 100 Aus$ on a deal compared to local prices. I wish I had some shares in this company, but I don’t).
