Cold weather running tips/suggestions?

I am doing a relay race in early March in Nevada.
My leg is 7 miles long and it starts near the city of Pahrump at approx 1am. Being in the dessert I was told that the temperature can be anywhere from the mid 30’s to high 40’s.

I have never race in temp that low. The lowest temp I raced in was approx 48 degrees for a 5k race.

What should I wear? Do you guys have any tips or suggestions?

It will depend a bit on whether there’s any wind.

If you live in the snow-belt you’ll race in that weather wearing only tights and a long-sleeve T, and then gloves and a cap.
Since you aren’t from that kind of weather I suggest you dress just as I described plus add on a windproof nylon shell over that. A simple thin set of nylon pants and wind jacket can weigh only ounces and keeps air from moving through the under layer making all the difference.

Mid 30’s isn’t that cold at all. My run yesterday was done at an easy pace - temps started in the mid 20’s and ended mid 30’s.

Assuming light to no wind - I’d want to only have light tights and a light long underwear top on during the race. A nice silk weight short sleeve top (long underwear type) and light gloves would be an alternative.

For warm-up or it you have to start the race cold - I’d add a light hat, gloves for sure, and another medium weight long sleeve long underwear top. I’d strip these off once I got hot about mile 2. You can stuff hats/gloves in your tights and then wrap the long underwear top around your waist or bring an old one to throw away.

If it was windy - I’d go with lycra shorts under very light windproof tights and a silk weight short sleeve top (REI-outlet.com has some Giordino on sale now 50%) under a very light windproof/tight jacket. Gloves/light hat also.

If it was over 40 - I’d consider wearing shorts and definitely go with a silk weight top (either short or long sleeved).

The wind will be the most important factor.

What jyeager said. Sounds like typical fall training weather for me. Add mud and you have spring training

i’ll second that, plus, you would rather feel just a little underdressed at the start rather than a little overdressed.as you run, your body will quickly heat up.

Ditto what everybody else has said.

What temps are you currently training in?
Rule of thumb is to dress like it’s 10 to 15 degrees warmer, as you will warm up during the run.

Gets tricky if there is a wind. But at 1am I’d think the wind would be calm.

7 miles isn’t a long leg. You can peel off extra layers during the run.
I like to be warm, so I overdress in the beginning. It’s easy to tie your jacket or top around your waist, and stuff gloves in a pocket.

Good luck, sounds like fun!

got a weather condition for my race tomorrow. forecast is low 40’s w/ 10 mph wind.
