Cody Beals Going to Kona (2019?)

I’m at the awards. Cody took the spot!

you continue to validate that you have no idea what you are talking about

kona is a terrible terrible race that should only be undertaken as a financially invested pro when you are ready to race, mentally and physically. otherwise you’re just throwing money down the drain which, as a pro, you generally don’t have a lot of.

Yes, but taking the “when I feel I’m ready approach” could mean never. He’s qualified, so he needs to take the shot because he has no idea what could happen to him after.

Apparently he feels ready! Or at least he’s leaving the option open.

He just told the crowd at IMCHOO that he’s taking his 2019 slot this time.

Good for Cody.

Btw, how was the race start without the swim? I saw somewhere that they would do like a time trial start. But how can you be sure you have won when crossing the finish when it is a time trial?

Pro field started one minute a part… seeded numbers 1 to 20 there’s was a random draw to decide who starts when.

Amateur field was also TT start but 2 by 2 every 5 seconds a part… as first shows to the line to start.

He had an impressive day.
Nose in the wind all day long.
Great race at IMMT and today validated his efforts a few short weeks ago.
I’m not sure he has a real weakness.** I think he has the horses to do some damage in Kona**.

We both agree on that…so how do we actually GET HIM TO SHOW UP AT KONA and hurt Jan and crew in 2019?

From what I seen in IMMT he still a lot of work to do on the swim he came out more 2:30 behind Antoine Jolicoeur Desroches (50:10) in the water 52:35 non wetsuit swim, Sanders 55:07. Is bike was impressive yesterday at IMChoo 116mi…4h20 (Hilly course) and good run but to hurt Jan, he will need to ran sub 2h40…

Lets the training process start for 2019

Team Canada TTT to T2 in 2019 I suppose!

Just Aussies and Germans in between, so we need another Canuck shot at a Kona win.

Don’t be mean to Freddie van Lierde!

Cody did take the spot but from what I have heard he is not ready to commit to racing Kona in 2019 just yet.

Hardly…taking the spot and going to Kona are two very different things. Let the speculation continue…

We will shame him into using the slot given the next in line was Matt Russel who almost died from an accident and came back to racing. No doubt Matt would take it to go to Kona. Cody, time to pull the full trigger on the Kona 2019 path…no waffling!

Admire his ‘patience’ if he doesn’t: not sure of the logic though.

It’s the only race to really measure yourself against all the top guys with their ‘A’ races on show, the race of truth.

If he’s one of those guys who takes a few goes to get it right, best to start the learning ASAP (and fail while ‘relatively’ unknown)
If he’s one of those guys who more or less nails it from the off then he’s missing some time from the next level of his career by delaying
If he’s one of those guys who never nails it, then it’s best to find out early in order to move on to something else

Surely he’ll watch the coverage and know he has to be there next year…

I think one of his concerns was the economics of him racing at Kona. At the end of the day he is a young pro earning a living, an IM or 70.3 win pays more than a top 10 place at Kona. I think he said he needed to be top 5 to justify it & he wants to be sure of that.

Fair point - we always think of the racing in isolation, not the fine financial line pros have to tread to re prize money/sponsorship which puts food on the table and a roof over their heads and how that impacts their decisions.

Having said that, I would still say his best chance to see top 5 in Kona 2020 is to race Kona in 2019 and learn - if he can financially, rather than sitting it out and hoping to nail it first time in 2020.

Personally I’d love it if Cody just updated his Blog/Website with how he’s doing right now. Its likely been a real whirlwind for him, but he’s likely drawing more people to his story and website than ever. Now would be a great time to capitalize on that to speak directly to the people who are learning about him for the first time. I worked at Queen’s where he went to University and as a Canadian Triathlete/Duathlete I take an interest in Canadians kicking ass. Hopefully he continues to do what he’s been doing, which is quietly going about his business winning and getting better every year (but with a few more blog posts).

I think he should retire now, undefeated at the IM distance.

Ditto, just poked him.

From a financial standpoint, I wonder how much of his Kona costs Ventum would be willing to kick in. I don’t think they’ve ever had someone go top 10 in Kona. As the bike sponsor of Ironman I’m sure they’d love to change that.
