Coburg (Ontario) bike course?

Wife and I have decided to do the Coburg tri.

I’ve been told the bike course is quite hilly so I’m giving some thought to leaving the P2K at home and riding the road bike in a slammed position just for experimentation and the fun of it.

How technical/hilly is the Coburg bike course?

The Cobourg course is quite hilly but nothing really long and steep (like the Thursday Oak Hills ride). I raced it last year and just powered up all the hills in the big chain ring since they are typically not very long. I’d ride the tri bike since the first half you do a lot of the climbing and on the way back you get to really roll down the same hills (you start at the lake and go north so it gains elevation and then you reap the benefits on the way back to T2). I’m planning on being at the ride Thursday night if you’re going to be there and can give you more info then.

Allan,

Thanks for the info. We’ll drive down to Coburg before the race and check out the course. We’ll miss you on the Thursday ride this week because we’re taking the afternoon off to go scuba diving in Kingston. That’s the problem when you’ve got two hobbies - they often conflict. Catch you at the ride next time.

From what I remember, only 2 really big hills. And to compare to something like…ohhh…LP for instance, they are nothing significant. I think one is around the 7-10km mark, and the other is the long climb to the half way mark. Allan is correct that most of the climbing is on the way out, so you get a nice downhill coming back to T2.

One note…watch your bike coming back to the transition area. You have to dismount and then step up over the curb onto the grass. I rushed it last year, and when I thought I had cleared my bike, I actually didn’t, and the rear wheel hit the curb on the way down. POP! Nice way to end the bike leg.

The run is flat BTW. Not much shade though, so be careful with these humid Ontario days lately!

Good luck. Sorry I won’t be out there this year.
