anyone have experience with gordo as a coach?
spent a week with him at a camp. very friendly, extremely brillant, rock star personality…he has all (most) of the answers you just need to pin him down and make sure you stay on his level of discussion.
Yes! He’s a good Man and a good coach.
I do not have experience with him as a coach but I met him briefly in New Zealand just before Ironman New Zealand and have read a lot of his writing and his book “Going Long”. Based strictly on this exposure I respect his perspectives and insights.
One thing that also is worthy of mention is that Gordo sort of “graduated” from everyman status as a mop’er finishing only a few seconds in front of me at Ironman Canada back in 1996 and then decided he wanted to get serious about the sport. He then set about doing what many of us have pondered- he trained full time and realized a dream of being an elite level Ironman athlete. That, in and of itself, gives him a unique insight into preparation for long distance events that I wager few other people have. I am a big believer that being a good athlete does not necessarily a good coach make- but Gordo has consistently demonstrated an ability to give back to the sport through his book and his website. Sure, he gets paid- as well he should. His contributions are still very significant in my opinion and he strikes me as one of the more capable and valid coaches. If I were to look to a coach- especially for longer distance events- he would be one of the very first resources I wold investigate along with Scott Molina, Mark Allen and Dave Scott.
