Co2 inflators - any recommendations?

so the frame pump doesn’t fit anywhere on the new Cervelo, and I’m not sure it makes sense to clutter up a beautiful aero frame anyhoo. As a practising retrogrouch I’ve long resisted co2 inflators, but I guess I’ve worn down…

Is there any real difference between them, other than the threaded/nonthreaded cartridge ?
any brand you particularly like ?

something doesn’t jibe.

Depends on if you have a disc wheel or not. Some disc wheels have very small openings for inflators.
I use the standard crack pipe inflator with threaded cartridge. vervy small and fits in my extra small saddle bag.

The non-threaded cartridges are cheaper and you can get them in more places when you are on the road. but, those require a small amount of extra room in your saddle bag due to the design of the inflator. Its larger because it has to hold the entire CO2. The crack pipe design just threads onto the CO2 directly.

I used the threaded ones for a long time (still have them)…

but this is a lot better:

I agree…the AirChuck works really well and is more controllable than the ones that are regulated solely by unscrewing the cartridge.

Get one of these they rock. And then you never have to worry about messing up with CO2 cartridge!

I have one and I can’t tell you how many times I have loaned it to someone on a group ride after they messed up with a cartridge

Dan…

I’ve heard the way to go is to use one of these - http://www.trisports.com/inulpl.html or http://www.trisports.com/inul.html - make sure it’s threaded, and just use the top portion. The trigger allows you to control CO2 flow and it’s still small enought to stasj away in a jersey pocket or saddle bag. I’m planning on trying it out this year (I carried a small hand pump in my jersey on each ride - a real pain).

Gotta love the description on nashbar

"The smallest, simplest inflation device yet. Just thread on a cartridge push the Air Chuck onto the valve and go. Presta or Schreadrer it makes no difference, the Air Chuck goes both ways. All metal construction, includes one 16g cartridge. "

Apparently the Air Chuck likes the male and female valves!

I use the AirStick. Small enough to even go in a jersey pocket (okay, it sticks out some), fits beside a water bottle, etc… Delivers pressure well into the 150’s (I’ve never topped the pump out yet), and is easy to use. Dual action so it inflates fast. No need for cartidges.

threaded Air-Chuck, super light, easier to use than “screw regulation” types, fits in disc cutouts, cheap, small…

Non-threaded is waay cheaper and you can buy a big 25 pack of 12g cartridges at Walmart Sports Authority for like $6.99. Bummer is the inflators are bigger, and in my experience they are more prone to seal failure and the one time I blew through three C02 cartridges leaving me stuck waiting for someone else to ride by really really sucked. I go threaded now.

I keep my zefal pump in the rear tringle from the dropout to the seat cluster.I think it is more out of the way. I don’t like the CO2 inflaters.

heh. I feel the need for speed…

I got the Ultraflate Plus and it takes both threaded and non-threaded cartridges. I just tape it to my stem between the areo bars.

yeah, I’ll always carry a pump on training rides. I have one of the mini-pumps that works pretty well and fits in the jersey pocket. But for racing, having spent large sums of money on an aero frame, it seems foolish to load it up with non-aero pumps, &c…

thanks all, I think the threaded Air Chuck is it. It’s only for racing, so I hope I won’t be needing too many cartridges…

I use an Ultraflate and non-threaded cartridges

You can buy the non-threaded cartridges at paintball stores for about 50 cents each instead of $2 at most bike stores.
