Call me a dork, but this morning while fixing my major pinch flat on a training ride, I put the whole X-Lab 700c cartridge in and the clincher bead popped out of the rim and then before I could let any air out the thing blew violently. Training partner lent me their tube to get us home. Moral: Be cautious when filling that tire; less is more. Tomorrow I start carrying two tubes on rides.

It probably wasn’t overinflated; you probably had the tube stuck between the tire and rim. Very easy to do, especially with tight-fitting road tires.
I do the pinch pressure check on the good tire , just fill in short bursts. I fill tires to say 50 -60 psi and deflate, so all the twists & pinches get relieved / unwraped , thats with a hand pump. Without a gauge you can guess within 10 psi of 90 . better a bit low, to get home.
From what you described in the original post, it sounds like the tire just wasn’t seated quite right. That’s probably why the bead came out of the rim. After that, there’s nothing holding your tube in and it could pop pretty easily.
I had the same experience this morning. Doing a sprint tri today I flatted and when filling the new tube it exploded. I ended up using a patch kit on the original flat tube to finish. It had split on a seam. Needless to say I finished much lower in the standings than I wanted. I guess I should have taken my time changing as haste makes waste. What was up with that first tube?
