I am 210 at 5’9" and am planning on buying some used zipps or hed clinchers. both companies recommend the heavier build, but they are hard to find on the used market. any other heavier guys used a “non-heavy” build with success? Or more importnatly failures? Do I buy what I have found, which are some good deals, or do I hold out to find a clydes or stallion build?
I ride 404 Clydesdales and love them. I would find the ones you want and hold out for them, that’s what I did. Saved about 1/2 on ebay.
I’m on my 4th year on 404s at 205-215 lbs. I have no concerns about them at all. They used to publish a cut-off weight for going to the clydes, but I don’t think there is anything official now. If I remember right, it was 230.
Thom
How about 200lbs?
I have Hed 60/90. I train on Bontrager Race XXLite wheels. I have 3 sets of very light mtn bike wheels. I’ve never had any problems with any wheels due to my weight. Not even having trouble keeping them true (but that depends primarily on build quality not my weight).
Unless you have found that you tend to be hard on wheels I wouldn’t be afraid of those wheels at 210lbs.

I have almost the exact same setups. I am about 210 right now…a touch less actually. But I started riding on them at 225.
Never had an issue…just ran 23’s for the tires per the people from HED.
HED3’s
.
There are a handful of reasons for the weight cutoff, and the biggest one (no pun intended) is CYA.
They’re covering their @$$es in case of failure due to stress/extra forces, but if you’re hovering within the limits, there’s no real reason to go Clydesdale.
I used to have a LEW heavy-built set but it’s b/c I bought 'em used. I’m 176lbs raceweight and liked how stiff they were. They were needlessly 60g heavier per wheel, but still, really stiff…
I’m 6’2" 200 - 205 lbs. and use Hed 3’s as my daily wheel. I have run over pot holes, dropped off curbs, etc. and they are still in perfect shape.
So HED and Zipp, Anyone have any other experience with other carbon wheels that are good for Clydesdales. I am in the same case as above 210-220 looking for a wheelset that will be my new race wheels.
I used to be 210 at 6’3" and would pop spokes out of fancy wheels constantly.
do not try this, lol
bigger dues are not just bigger, they tend to have higher peak torque too.
SNAP
goes the spokes
