Close Gitmo, Use Army Field Man to govern interrogation

http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/01/22/guantanamo.order/index.html

Not surprised at the closing, but disappointed that it has not been thought through ahead of time:

"A third executive order establishes an interagency task force to lead a systematic review of detention policies and procedures and a review of all individual cases.
The task force, Obama stated, will also “provide me with information in terms of how we are able to deal (with) the disposition of some of the detainees that may be currently in Guantanamo that we cannot transfer to other countries, who could pose a serious danger to the United States.”

They’re still not sure what to actually do with the detainees…

ps. No extra interrogation techniques for the CIA, Army field manual only…that hurts.

Perhaps the worst thing George W. Bush did during his Presidency was to order decent honorable American service men and women to torture prisoners.

Obama didn’t have much time but I assume that is why he said it will close within a year and not immediately.

I imagine they have a pretty good idea what they’re going to do with them. I think it’s the appearance of due diligence that matters. Just a guess, though.

Perhaps the worst thing George W. Bush did during his Presidency was to order decent honorable American service men and women to torture prisoners.
exactly! Shooting those piece of shit prisoners would have been much more efficient.

Seems to me like we’re getting an interesting look at his priorities as President.

Not the economy. Not the deficit. Not national security. Not job creation. Not even healthcare.

Nope, the very first item of business is to give consideration to enemies of this country.

It will be interesting to see what the task force recommends.

It appears the order is a bit of a sleight of hand.

  1. It has been reported that the intelligence community will be allowed to engage in “enhanced interrogation techniques” in the future.
  2. No one will be tried in an Article III court with the same rights as citizens.
  3. The most dangerous will be tried by some form of tribunal that is not an Article III court.
  4. The most dangerous will not be held on US soil.

Nope, the very first item of business is to give consideration to enemies of this country.

Or you could say that he is attempting to erase what he considers to be a big foreign policy blemish. What he is suggesting is not really much different than what was being done by Bush. Quite frankly, I would much rather see him address his foreign policy agenda than the disastrous domestic policy agenda he has laid out.

***I would much rather see him address his foreign policy agenda than the disastrous domestic policy agenda he has laid out. ***

I wouldn’t really characterize Gitmo as “foreign policy” per se… I do agree that just about anything that keeps him from mucking things up domestically is generally a good thing. I just find it interesting that that’s where his priority lies. I’m guessing that if asked, most of the people who voted for him would have hoped/expected that it would have been elsewhere. Of course, they’re likely to be in for a lot of disappointments, so maybe it’s good for them to get used to it early on.

KnowwhatImean?!

"Perhaps the worst thing George W. Bush did during his Presidency was to order decent honorable American service men and women to torture prisoners. "

Apparently, you have no shame.

I just find it interesting that that’s where his priority lies.

I think I would agree with you if I thought his order really did anything. Gitmo was/is a huge rallying point for the far left. However, once you really sit down and look hard at the situation and have actual responsibility for deciding what to do with the folks there, the situation is not as far out there as the lefties paint it. Thus, he has not closed it, he has set no one free, he has moved no prisoner to the US, he has not guaranteed any of those prisoners any rights to trials or courts that they did not currently have. The only real change has been to temporarily limit our intelligence community to the techniques prescribed in the Army Field Manual. I think he is trying to appear as though he is keeping a campaign promise.

How long did it take to sign a bill to close Gitmo? Maybe a minute?

He spent the few months between the election and the inauguration almost solely on the economy.

What would you have him do to help the economy exactly?

Nope, the very first item of business is to give consideration to enemies of this country.

Not true. He has been working on every other issue you described diligently. You may or may not be happy with what solutions he comes up with, but you have to admit he has been on the ball as much as any president has been (and more so than most) in his time since the election. If he could make an executive order to fix the economy, I’m sure he would.

I’ll admit that closing gitmo is mostly a political maneuver, and partialy a diplomatic maneuver, but your statement above is just simply not true.

What a jackass. He should have just fixed the economy first!

Perhaps the worst thing George W. Bush did during his Presidency was to order decent honorable American service men and women to torture prisoners.

Where do you get this kind of crap? As slowguy said, have you no shame, sir? Do you even think about what you’re posting? Do you have even the slightest, smallest shred of evidence to back this kind of garbage up? Based on previous posts, I’m gonna go out on a limb and say “no.”

Spot

“exactly! Shooting those piece of shit prisoners would have been much more efficient.”

Tyrannosaurus Rex:

Maybe you could sign up for that job…sounds like you might enjoy that duty.

I would. Without pay.

**What a jackass. He should have just fixed the economy first! **

It must be tough being Obama. On your first day you can either fix the economy, solve the Middle East crisis, end the Iraq war, end the war on terror or cure cancer.
