There seems to be serious momentum to make this a requirement…several manufacturers have mentioned it will be standard on 2008 models and congress may step in for all bikes (i.e. Walmart/Dynacraft lawsuit).
Doesn’t seem like the most aero solution to a problem which may or may not exist, esp in the triathlon world. Pretty cool design though.
Yep…pretty much an overweight QR/wheel retention system.
The short version is a bunch of kids were injured when the expert Walmart bike mechanics didn’t tighten the QR. Lawsuits, etc followed which led to a lucky guy’s invention being adopted by some large bike manufacturers who didn’t want to get sued anyone.
Our liberal friend (no offense, statement of fact) in the northland is drafting a law to make it mandatory bike equipment (but, perhaps like selling a bike with reflectors, using it may be optional. We’ll see)
From my understanding, the OEM/LBS sets the tension (not sure if it can be changed). The closure offers primary and secondary retention. Both are “fixed”. The lever is either on or off (via click, thus clix), unlike the current QR.
Wonder if any of the bike manufacturers know more info…like the guys at Trek.
