Clipless pedal suggestions

WHat type of pedals would you start out with if you had a knee problem. I have seen lots of riders say that Time pedals having huge amounts of float were the ticket for the knee troubles. Having not used clipless before, others have suggested to get a moutain type SPD pedal so as to be able to get in both sides, an ease of use thing. The Time pedals look huge and I would think more comfortable in the “hotspot” respect. Any one model a better starter pedal to get in and out of from them? Also, I can’t find a website for them. Thanks in advance.

I use Time and couldn’t live without them. They allow you to adjust your position not only on the rotational axis but laterally also. I haven’t tried the impacts, so I can’t say if they’re better though. I’ve tried other pedals including look and speedplay, but once you get used to the Time float it’s hard to use anything else.

Thanks for the info, does anyone have a Time website?

as others have said before pedal choice is very individual. having said that i had 2 knee surgeries last year and speedplay zeros have allowed me to get back on the bike with no further problems. the two limit screws, which adjust internal/external heel movement, allowed me to taylor my foot position perfectly based upon my unique biomechanics. everyone is different but zeros have been the answer for me…good luck with your decision.

I’ve used speedplay X-series pedals for the last 3 or 4 years and love them. I think I’d rather have the zeroes so that I could adjust the float. I’ve got problem knees from flat feet and pronated ankles and feel that the added float helps my knees find their natural track through the pedal motion. Most of the people I with are either on speedplays or times for what it’s worth.

I’ve heard several people recommend Speedplay Zeros as well for those with knee problems. Although (so far) my knees are fine, I have Zeros and think they’re great.

Pedals are a highly personal thing, much like saddles.

I rode Look-style Shimano pedals for years with no issues.

Switched to Speedplay in the late 90’s and developed some knee issues. Took me a long-ass time to figure it out, given an on/off/on cycling habit.

Just bought some Keywins, which I hope will solve the problem.

I know of a few people who swear by the old Time system, but do not like the new Impact line (I think Tom D is another one of them)

Lots of people love the new Speedply Zero’s, and I’ve yet to hear a bad thing about the new “Lance pedal” (Shimano’s new Look style pedal)

Ultimately, pedals are one of those things you just have to try and see for yourself.
