Clincher Tyres- Whats so bad about a folding tyre?

Hi All,

I was just wondering what is so bad about a clincher folding tyre. I can get them pretty cheap so I just wanted to know what would be better to get a folding or a normal clincher. Does a clincher loose its shape easily???

Cheers Alexander

As far as I know… nothing! I far prefer folding tires to wire bead. Sure they may be more difficult to get on the very first time, but they’re no different (other than being substantially lighter) than a wire bead clincher.

Ummm…it doesn’t sound like you know much about tires in general. Folding clinchers tend to be the better versions for any particular tire. The wire bead clinchers tend to be the cheaper versions, and they have significantly higher rolling resistance compared to a like tire. If you are looking at CHEAP folding clinchers, you’re simply looking at a cheap tire. Folding or non-folding has nothing to do with it. And a cheap clincher is rarely worth the pennies you’re saving, unless it is a screaming deal on a top-tier tire. Truly cheap clincher tires of any type are going to be more trouble than you want. They’ll be significantly slower, prone to cuts and pinch flats, and generally don’t last longer than the better tires. (That is a serious generalization, for there are some good deals in cheaper tires, at least for something to train on…but if you want a tire good for racing…spend the extra quid on some premium tires). Top clincher tires are running about $50-65 US per tire these days. With a bit of searching you might find deals on these models as low as about $40 for last years models. Spend the $. Its worth it in the long run.

x2… go with a michpro3 or old stock pro2 if you can find one. I also like Hutchinsons higher end tire’s. Just seemed to work good in training for me. Not many flats. Seems I get a most of my flats on all my tires when it is time to change them.

And since we’re dealing with someone who knows little about tires, lets not confuse them further.

michpro3 = Michelin Pro Race 3

pro2 = Michelin Pro Race 2

You probably want them insize 700x23 if you have standard-sized bicycle wheels (which you probably do).

sorry :frowning:
.

actually i much prefer wire bead training tyres. they tend to be more puncture resistant. Maxxis Detonator and Bontrager Race Lite Hardcase are my faves. They last forever. sure they ride dead as a dodo but then the race wheels effect is that much sweeter.

Who said folding clincher tires were bad?

Don’t let it happen again.
