Clincher riders: Which tires are you using on your race wheels?

I’m currently riding Michelin Pro Race 2’s but I’m considering something with a bit more pressure when I get my 404’s.

What are you folks riding?
.

Max pressure on Zipp clinchers is 125. I run Continental Attack/Force tires (700x22 front 700x23 rear) with 115-120 psi on my Zipps.

conti gp3000 - i think the max psi is 120 though so i don’t know whether that helps you or not.

good luck on getting another tire actually onto the 404’s - stay with the Michelins - 115-120 psi is plenty.

Look at veloflex record. They are hand made in the former vittoria factory, before they moved to the far east. Best made clinchers in the world. 20mm wide, 130-145 psi. check www.veloflextires.com.

This is not really a training tire. But to tell you the level of my depravity, I sat and smelled them for a while when I first got them. Natural rubber, mmmmmm.

All the big tire companies spend their money on advertising and putting funny colors on the tires. Veloflex is the real deal.

Tufo Clincher/Tubluars, Jet 160 gram. You can put 160 psi in them but the ride gets a bit rough. Expensive for clinchers, I think I paid about $70 per tire at Glory Cycles.

Stick with your Michelins. I have them on all my bikes, including on a set of 404s and have not found anything better. I think they go up to 120 psi which is probably more than you’ll need. They are a great tire.

I use the Veloflex Record clinchers for TT and Pave for road racing but considering the number of colors available for the various Veloflex tires, I just have to grin at the humor about the putting funny colors on the tires.

Michelin Pro Race = Flat

Had more problems with them, but maybe that’s just my experience

I suggest GP 3000.

Unless I have it wrong looks like you can’t use the tufo ast max ppressure with 404s
.

Yeah, I jsut checked out their site. They have followed a bit with that. If its alright, I think I will pretend they only come in black.

I honestly don’t think that you will find a faster clincher tire than the Michelin Pro Race.

120psig is all that you will need in them

Indeed. Michelin pro race…the axial pro had the lowest rolling resistance than all other tires (inc. the continental 3000 or something like that…the super light grey and black slick tire) and all the tubulars but the silk dugast, which is a track only tubular.
Done in Le cycle mag in 99 or so before the pro race came

I have to agree.

GP3000 Light and reliable.

The 404 clinchers have a pressure limit somewhere under 120. Besides, if you pump your tires above about 115 and ride on actual roads (instead of on a track) you will start slowing down. Hard tires are slower on real roads. That’s why Zipp felt it was ok to keep the aluminum thin and put a pressure limit on the wheel. People are foolish to go above 120 anyway.

BTW-- stick with the Pro Race 2’s. Sure, the top-end Vittorias are probably just as fast, but you already own the Michelins. I haven’t had a puncture in over a year (coupla pinch flats). They’re plenty durable.

Give Veloflex’s a try (they have all kinds of good choices for width/tread depending on road surface). And you don’t need more than 125psi. And only that much for something like 19mm, which you probably wouldn’t want to run on most roads anyway…

Michelin Pro Race’s are fast. They tend to cut easily (in my experience), but not puncture.

Conti’s are good too.

Oh, ya: Michelin Pro Races on race and training wheels right now(yellow).

Thanks for the replies folks.

After some debating, and a phone call to ZIPP, I decided to keep the 700 X 23 Pro Race 2’s on my training wheels and put a pair of Vittoria 700 X 20 Open Corsa EVO KS on the 404’s. Sure, it’s a tight fit, but with the extra PSI (MAX 125psi on 404 clinchers), and narrower contact area, they should be pretty fast.

Another vote for Veloflex.

any chance veloflex will make some 650 clinchers?

currently ride bontragers, been pretty pleased with them, and they come in both 650x20 & 650x23 which is nice.

Peace,
