Cleats move back, seat goes?

Due to recent foot surgery had to move cleats back almost 2 centimeters, about how much do I need to adjust seat height?

Down.

Meaning your foot is farther forward over the spindle? The spindle moved directionally towards you heel?

I’m never going to say never with bike fitting b/c the longer I live the more contradictions I see where someone says ‘wow the opposite worked for me’. However, since this is something I have gone through with midfoot/arch cleats which are almost at my midfoot, not quite…it necessitated a serious drop in saddle height and forward. So much so that my roadie TT cyborg can’t get the saddle far enough forward!

I’m sure Jordan or someone else with a pedigree in fitting will chime in, but moving my cleats way back necessitated a saddle lowering and forward…significantly.

Depends on the person. In my case, saddle height went UP, since I dropped my heel less. That’s what seems to happen more often than not in my opinion - less heel drop, which means saddle up. But for some people, I can see that it is less load on the calf muscles, so maybe more heel drop, and a lower saddle height.

Does dorsiflexing cause predispose one to heel drop?

I have always been the opposite of say LA who is a massive ankler…I look at him pedal and it’s beautiful, but I can’t do 8mph ankling. No one taught me to dorsiflex, but it just happened and then one day someone said the word and I had no idea what it meant…but I was doing it.

Yes. Your foot is attached to a pedal, so the only way to dorsiflex is to drop your heel. Can’t raise your toes, unless you plan on stretching the crank or unclipping.

For most people, it will be seat DOWN (but not very much).

Thanks for the replys. After reading Joe Freils blog seemed I should lower the seat however after trying this it didn’t feel right so I ended up raising it just a little ~.5cm and it felt better.

Please forgive a stupid question, by why move the seat up or down at all?

Last year I shifted my speedplay cleats all the way back, as far as they would go and did not adjust my seat at all. It certainly felt better.
