Cleats coming loose

Here is a Newbie problem…
I bought two pairs of carbon soled shoes this season - Tri race shoes (look KEO cleats) and Cyclocross shoes (Shimano SPD cleats)
After a few hours of riding the cleats start to move as the bolts holding them become loose and my foot wiggles around in the pedal.
How tight to I crank them down? I’m afraid of damaging the shoe if I over-torque it.

The cleat screws need to be very tight, but if you’re unsure of the torque required, use some BLUE Loctite. DO NOT use Red Loctite.

This is a typical problem with carbon soles. My Sidis came with a “sticker” (basically double sided tape) to help keep the cleats in place. Personally I’ve found that thin layer of Shoo Goo on the cleat keeps it from shifting (it’s the shift that makes the bolts come loose, since it removes the preload the cleat places on the bolts).

I second the loctite recommendation and also suggest you talk to your retailer about the application so that you also understand why certain types of loctite are a bad idea… i.e. if you ever want to remove those cleats without stripping your shoe threads. Have a look in the shoe or cleat manual for a recommended torque spec and use that as a guide to which loctite to use - likely blue.
