Clear Lake Pics

First of all…CONGRATULATIONS to RAPPSTAR! What a great day for Jordan, taking 2nd. Katy and I had a fabulous time, riding out on the course and cheering everyone on, then doing a run and even more cheering. And, it always makes me very happy to get to spend time with Slowman and Monty and the kids (Charlee, Punkin and Nelson were all there too!)

The Clear Lake venue was fantastic. I’d never been up there before, but we are going to do a weekend of training up there sometime this summer. Nice riding, a nice lake to swim in, it looked like there were some trails to run out on the bike course, and a decent Mexican restaurant, right on the water. AND HEAT! AND SUNSHINE! I was in heaven.

Here are some pictures from the day:

Also–a big congrats to COUSIN ELWOOD for winning his AG and to new STers tricabecinha for his 2nd place in his AG.

Cath fantastic job. Talked to Kim last night and she was giddy about how nice a race that was. She could not believe how beautiful the lake was and how senic the bike course. That is going to develop into a hell of a race.

Slowman, I’m digging the classic Martin&Co t-shirt! Nothing beats a booming D-28 for bluegrass.

Great pics, Cathy. You guys sure know how to live the life, eh?

great pics looks like a great day out on the course!!

Nice pix Cathy. Let’s hope the race is a success and they come back. As for training there in the summer, it gets VERY hot come July and Aug. It is very common to reach triple digits there and can stay that way for days at a time. Although humidity is quite low so that helps. My biggest bitch about that lake in the summer is the algae blooms. It is quite shallow and really warms up in the summer. The algae growth explodes, which sucks the oxygen out of the lake and causes fish kills. Lot’s of dead fish floating around during mid summer. Some really bad years they have to pick them up off the shore due to smell. I think they generally end up on leeward side of lake (eastern side) due to prevailing westerly winds. I have swam in that lake when the algae was so bad it kinda stuck to you when you got out…like a green slime. Not trying to slam the location but there is a reason they do the race in early June. I think May would be better since they lucked out on the weather…it could have been quite hot as it will be later this week.

That is fine with me as I HATE San Francisco in the summer with 50F and fog. Hate it. Sitting outside, drinking a beer, chatting with friends lakeside in a sleeveless top and shorts at 5PM was heaven. Here, you’d be sitting outside in the big coat and a scarf.

I don’t know, cargo pants and long-sleeved technical tee Saturday while doing loops with my kite at Ocean Beach. Talk about recharging batteries. Instead of “wife swap” we have “region swap”.

Yeah, we are having good weather this week. Of course we are–I’m off to DC tomorrow! Watch it turn back to cold and fog next Sunday.

Don’t forget Alaina Neary for AG win (doesn’t post much, but we met her after the race. Very nice person who should post more) and Chris Esposito who won Clydes.
Both of the girls who went up with me got AG seconds, but neither posts here.

Don’t know if it has been mentioned here, but the overall AG mans winner is also a poster here, Julian Symonds. He has been working very hard this past couple years at the Ironman distance, but his survival rates there have been sporatic at best. I think he may have found his real limit for real racing…Good job Julian…

HA! That’s the best line I’ve heard all day.

Jon Carroll’s column today is about our crazy weather.

“When we go to some place more than 20 miles from our house, our general strategy is to throw everything into the trunk. Down jacket, scarf, sweater, bathing costume, shorts, wifebeater, parka, thong; one has to be prepared, not just for the geographical change, but the time change; 3 p.m. in San Mateo is not at all the same as 7 p.m. in San Mateo.”

“the overall AG mans winner is also a poster here, Julian Symonds.”

    • Didn’t know that, and I trained with Julian (and his lady Joan) at Team Sheeper for several years. I was delighted to run into him up there, as I haven’t seen him since the Pacific Masters Long Course Championships in '04.
      Do you know his handle?

Great shots Cathy! You should sell those to the mags! A nice personal side of the race!

Cathy:
You wouldn’t have any pcitures of the ice cream truck, would you? That is the one visual I am missing from the race!

Great pics! Nice to see that you took so many of Ted Ås from Sweden

No, no photos of the ice cream truck. That is classified information.
And thanks Jay–it was fun taking pictures all day.

Thanks! And since Ted is an official Swedish DOODE, he deserves all those photos. A very nice guy too.

Great pics and thanks for supporting the race!!

It was an awesome race, and an awesome venue- I had a blast out there (though the run was really demoralizing!) I really hope the series succeeds! Thanks again for putting on an excellent race, and thanks to the town of Lakeport for being so supportive.

It was great to meet cousin elwood out there, and thanks for encouraging me to post more  Hope you’re recovering well!!
