Cleaning and Lubing Chain (Tom D or others)

So I took my bike to my LBS for a little tune-up before my last race. I noticed a lot of chain lube/grease, both on the chain and ‘gunked-up’ on the rear derailleur and front gears after I got it back. Is that how it should be?

What is the best way to clean and lube a chain, gears. cogs, etc? While I’m asking, how do you clean your bike?

I really thought this was going to be about something else. I guess you’re not Gunther.

This should help:

Hmmm, not to dis on a brother bike shop but…

A smarter man than I (who owns a fine bike shop in Grand Haven, Michigan) once told me that the key points of a tune-up, the things a customer is most likely to notice when the bike is wheeled out on the floor and they are ready to pay is whether it is clean and has freash lube and whether the tires have been properly inflated.

A customer can’t “see” a derailleur adjustment. If the customer looks at the bike and then says, “Now, what did you guys do?” then we have failed. It should be very apparent work was done on the bike. It should be spotlessly clean, smell good (so when it is inside their car on the way home it doesn’t stink like degreaser) have fresh lube, a full tune-up (every adjustment that can be made on the outside of the bike), a test ride and a safety check.

That means there shouldn’t be a bunch of nasty gunk in the drivetrain.

The first thing mechanics at the Tour de France do to bikes after a stage finish is wash them. Same here.
