For those of you who are not living in a 17-year cicada zone, here are some up close and personal pix I took. There are maybe 1000 on my property. You pretty much can’t walk anywhere without crunching them. They are coating the bark of a big tree in the front yard, I’d say 10 per every square foot, plus all over the house. These guys are on my back gate. If you’ve never seen them, they’re BIG, maybe 1.5" long. The chirping is sooooo loud, can hear it through the closed windows with the tv on. I think the chirping indicates mating, so live it up kids, you’ll all be dead in 30 days.
You’re like Marlin Perkins today.
Nice pics.
my office building has a book sale in the lobby every so often, some company does a traveling roadshow building to building 2 days at a time. last week, there was a dvd set of a full season of Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom. Marlin says, from a safe far distance away: “Jim, stick your head in the tiger’s mouth, see what happens.” Jim, the ultimate wingman.
nice pic.
welcome to life in Japan, where they’re called semi and its a constant reminder of summer. I kind of miss the sound actually…
They are HUGE in Japan. I was freaked out by them when I lived there.
