I’ve been running two macbooks in the house since 2006 or so. I’ve become increasingly reliant on the Google ecosystem for home, work, and play, on both my home computer and android HTC One, so I’m not seeing much downside to switching to Chromebook for everyday use. Both macbooks’ batteries are shot and last only 10 minutes or so when unplugged, and the cost of battery replacement is pretty darn close to what I’d pay for a new Chromebook. On top of that, I’m relying more and more on cloud storage over external hard drive, and Google is offering 1 TB of free storage (for 2 years) with every Chromebook purchase made before Janurary 1. The only downside I can see is losing the ability to transfer files from my Canon to a photo editing program prior to upload, though I’m not entirely sure it’s not possible to do with a Chromebook.
I’m thinking I can pick up the top-rated Toshiba Chromebook 2 for under $200 on Cyber Monday.
I’m in the same situation but what is stopping me are the various Garmin devices I have that connect via USB. I hear you can manually upload the activities file using garmin connect site, BUT the firmware upgrade WON’T work on Chromebook. To upgrade Garmin device firmware you will need a compatible OS, that means Windows or Mac. I’m thinking the best way to go might be a refurbished MacBook - I have seen recent models on expercom.com: https://www.expercom.com/
Mrs. Trispoke made the switch about two years ago after being an apple devotee. She primarily uses it for basics like email and surfing. She has become more reliant on google drive for a number of things.
I find the we encounter a number of small issues regarding excel conversion. Seems google still has a ways to go in that area. Not sure if she uses any other software. That is my biggest drawback from making the switch.
I upload from Edge 500 to chromebook with no trouble. You need to do a manual upload and find the specific file that you want on the device, but honestly it takes me no more time that it did with a windows-based laptop.
For my 310xt I did purchase the SporTablet uploader app for $6 so I could do Ant+ upload to my Galaxy S5. I usually have to power cycle the watch once after a workout for it to work though.
Good question. I’m not sure about that. I do still own a desktop computer for my computrainer, I just don’t have a need for a full computer 95% of the time, so I really like the chromebook as a laptop.
I purchased a chromebox for my dad last year. His PC was old and I was always fixing it and helping him with it. Since i got him the chromebox he has not called me on a single computer issue and he always thanks me for it. He basically does email, a little facebook and surfing and bills… Just my 2 cents.

Did you get it? On Cyber Monday i got an 11 inch Acer Cloudbook from Amazon for $139. It’s like a Chromebook with Windows. It arrived on Thursday or Friday and it went back on Monday. It was a piece of junk. So, for CyberWednesday I went to Best Buy and got an 11 inch Sumsung Chromebook 2. Using all my shopping skills, I got it for $166. This thing is great. Sure there are things that it can’t do but I got it to replace my Ipad not my laptop.
I’ve had it for less than a day and I don’t want to ever go back to my laptop. If you are used to the Chrome browser, you know everything you need to know to use this thing. If you have a Google account, all you have to do it sign in and it’s ready to go!
I didn’t get a chromebook. Mrs sphere bought a new Macbook Pro for my birthday, which is what I prefer to use but somewhat ridiculous given what I actually do with it.
I had the M7, which I guess is the last model before the current M8.
It was my first android so I don’t have much frame of reference, but I really liked the size, and especially the audio. Nothing even remotely compares to the two front facing speakers. That said, I had to put it in a case for protection, which added to the already substantial weight, so it felt like a brick in my scrubs pocket. Not ideal in that sense.
I switched it out for the Samsung Galaxy S6 active. Same screen size, better button configuration and function than the HTC, and damn near indestructible without a case. Feels lighter, thinner, and definitely faster (I retired the HTC because it was bogging down to a snails pace, then super buggy, and couldn’t seem to weed out the problem). I use earbuds and bluetooth frequently, so the loss of the device speaker isn’t much of an issue. Of the two, I’d buy the Samsung again in a heartbeat.
sphere, what HTC One do you have? Like it? Hate it?
If you’re looking at HTC phones I would not look at the One family. M9 took a step back from M8. I would look at the A9 instead. great design and you can get it unlocked without all the carrier crap on there. I can’t stress this enough, do NOT buy your phones from the carrier, they put an unbelievable amount of shit on phones (stuff you can see, and stuff you can’t). it bogs them down, not to mention other stuff like data collection.
I have a pretty new Lenovo 15 inch laptop (that I don’t even want to use after one day with the Chromebook). I got this to replace my Ipad that I’m tired of, so I wanted an 11 inch and I got the Samsung Chromebook2
