i was looking in the April edition of “Triathlete” and saw a pick of Chris Lieto’s bike. My question is how did he mount that Bontrager Speed Bottle to replace where you would traditionally put a Aero Bottle? You can tell he removed the nozzle where you would drink from and somehow put a new hole in the bottle where hre could insert the straw. i just thought that wold be a intresting idea. you wouldn’t have deal with little sponges.
…and you can’t refill it.

I am pretty sure I watched Chris refill it in the Kona coverage. He took the top off without issue refilled and closed the lid.

you can see it here.
The Bontrager Speed bottle and cage are mounted to the faceplate of the stem. Trek made a few of these as prototypes. The bottle was also modified for him. the straw was drilled into the back. As far as filling I saw one prototype that was a membrane that was placed over the cap. I am going to use the yellow mesh from my old profile bottle in the speed bottle in my next sprint.
I’m waiting for a company to design an aero bottle that has a simple lid. I’ve tried the lens cap on the Profile, but it’s not a perfect fit. Jetstream’s bigger bottle, the Podiumquest, has lids, but the Jetstream uses the sponge. I like the lid option in case you want to use Nuun’s or something similar.
I hate dealing with the mesh and the leaking lens cap is getting annoying. Anyone know if the Bontrager bottle design is an option for us average joe’s?
No, the membrane is too thin and water splashes out still. Leitos was a prototype and not a regular production model.

thats to bad, i think some people would really love this setup. oh well.
it is being worked on. Maybe next year if things come together?
There is another alternative for a aero front water bottle. It should be out any day now. I will try to post a pic of my bike tonight. It is sleeker than the profile bottle with a few more functions.
Here is a close - up picture. It seems the cage is screwed into the face plate… any ideas on how to do this?
A drill and a tap perhaps?
Not sure I would want to drill the face plate of most modern stems. You could probably drill holes in the cage and use longer stem bolts to attach the cage to the stem without modifying the stem. I’d rather have the cage fail that the faceplate.

I was also thinking there might be a way to right it using zip ties. I agree with you about drilling into the face plate and would not want to do that. Any other ideas… or people with experience. The PD aero bottle, annoys me and I have had problems with the new one in the both races I used it in.

Not too sure if a cage would be wide enough to fit the bolts on a faceplate, unless, you were to use one of the Ritchey 4 Axis stems.
Sounds like a good project.
its pretty easy to mount, not need for custom stuff… minoura (sp) front cage mount works! Its used more so by rec cyclist to put a water bottle on their bars.

.
Oh man…you mean the elites now have to look at the recrational guys for insight?! Nevermind, I don’t want a bottle attached to my stem anymore ![]()
Interesting… has anyone used this… some review?

That might not work for me, because I use an Oval stem and the bolts are reversed… any other thoughts?
