It has come to our attention that they are giving Chris Lieto a race entry to the upcoming 70.3 World Championships this upcoming weekend. Chris has NOT qualified for the event and several of our members are concerned and others even angry that they would allow him to race. When they created the race they made it clear that athletes would have to qualify and they also made it clear what those qualification procedures were.
How do others in the community feel about them letting Chris Lieto just show up and race? Why is bending the rules like this ok? There are plenty of other talented Pros that have worked their asses off and deserve to be there.
If you look a little closer, you will also note that 50 slots were given away in a lottery very early in the year. Not too difficult to see that action extended to a pro or two. Fair? I have no idea. Does this affect the purity of the sport? Not hardly as far as I can tell. Will it upset the prize money distribution? Far more likely. But then, when has money ever been associated with the purity of any sport?
I’m not aware of the details of the race or the procedure for pros. But ultimately this is a business and it’s their race. Plus I like Lieto. I may like you too but I don’t know who you are so I can’t comment.
Depending upon the IRONMAN event, competitors can gain entry by qualifying for a race by past performance, submitting a timely application in “open” events or winning a spot through a lottery process. WTC always reserves the right and discretion to permit other participants in its IRONMAN events.
The only person who should be really pissed about this is brother! ;o) But seriously, Chris is a great athlete and I wish him a great race. Should be a good one…
I love Lieto. Really nice and humble guy who is ballsy enough to back up his gutsy Kona performance with a world championship race less than a month later.
Why waste energy about such things when they’re stealing elections and dismantling the US Constitution?

Thanks for taking care of all the other issues first. If this is the one remaining issue in triathlon, we are lucky to be in such a sport.
