Is chocolate milk really any good as a post workout recovery supplement? Certainly seems like we are getting bombarded with the marketing telling us how great the stuff is. I have always used high quality protein like Muscle Milk or Gold Standard Whey as my go to after workout drink and I have a hard time believing that chocolate milk is better. What is it about chocolate milk that would make it such a powerful elixir for an athlete?
I don’t see the marketing. But a friend of mine just told me this trick today.
I was doing nothing for recovery. I would eat a sandwich or light lunch after. Not good. I have been considering adjusting my habits…
Then I raced for the first time and they gave us Muscle Milk after, and I liked the taste. I also noticed that it’s extremely low in fat, sugar and carbs, yet very high in protein (non-whey). So I bought some and have been using it off and on, and I notice a big difference in recovery. I liked the idea of taking in protein after a workout, and carbs and sugars before (I usually eat fruit 30 minutes or less before training, while my carbs are more evenly spread throughout my schedule).
My only hesitation with low fat chocolate milk is the calories, carbs and sugars…but I think I will try it to compare the difference. A mixture of the two depending on the type of workout I do might be a good answer too.
To the guy claiming you need to eat high glycemic foods after a workout - WHERE do you get this from? That seems the opposite of what I have heard. Not all high glycemic foods are created equal =O. Plus your logic is since it’s NOT high glycemic then it’s a waste?!?!
