Chiropractor vs. Osteopath

Anyone have insight on what the differences between the two are, or, if you’d recommend one over the other. For my left quad weakness/ITB/TFL/lower-back fiasco when cycling.

At one time osteopaths and chiropractors were once quite similiar. They both arrived on the scene in the late 19th century and developed similiar therapies but different theories. The main mode of therapy was the “adjustment” involving joints of the body, particularly of the spine.

After WWII the osteopaths started to become more like medical doctors. In some states the DO and MD degree are interchangeble. Many of the osteopathic schools even abandoned the original methods of spinal manipulation treatment and have adopted drug therapy and surgery identical to the medical schools. Others have held on a bit, but there is no doubt that the chiropractors are now the leaders in this type of therapy although some of the PT’s are starting to move into their techniques.

For this reason you’d probably be better off to find a sports orientated chiropractor than an osteopath nowadays for these type of musculo-skeletal problems. Some of the old time osteopaths are similiar to the chiropractor but they are a disappearing breed and most of the new ones would resemble a trip to the family physician.

That’s what I thought - they they seem to be particularly associated with pediatrics. In your opinion, how many visits to a chiro would it take to help a pelvic misalignment?

"how many visits to a chiro would it take to help a pelvic misalignment? "

Impossible to say over the net. Some patients take only one visit and others can take a few months. It depends upon the nature of the problem. The only thing I would suggest is ask around and get a recommendation for someone in your area who has a good reputation.

Thanks for the advice - I found a guy who treats other triathletes, and I’ll give him a call. He does ART, too.

FWIW I highly recommend ART. IM does certifications, for what that is worth–they will probably whore the logo to anyone for the right price.
