China, the next Capitalist Power?

Many people like to think that China is on their way to Capitalism and democracy, yet their power structure remains virtually unchanged, rule by dictatorship. The communist manifesto is still capitalism will fail and they are still a communist ruled country. Do you feel that China is an emerging capitalist nation or something different?

Interesting you wrote this today. I just had dinner with a friend who works for Danfoss (Daunfoos) in Beging China. He is from Belgium, Danfoss is a belgian company that produces small valves and gears.

Talking to him and his wife was facinating. He has formally worked in the United States and in Europe. So he spoke of the contrasts between the Americas, Europe and China.

Do not forget that China is HUGE!! He said the differences between Beging, Shang Hai and Hong Kong were remarkable. Shang Hai and Hong Kong being very “Westernized”. Business meeting were very much focused on money. In Beging, polotics still rule the day - meeting are formal and have much process in honoring certain people etc. before getting down to business.

The story his wife told of going to the post office was facinating. You go to one place to get your letter “approved” meaning it is the correct size and the writing on the envelope is in Blue - if it is not written in blue - it is rejected. Then you must go to another line to get a stamp, then to yet another line to get your stamp glued (stamps come with no glue), then stand in another line to drop your letter off to get mailed. Four different people you must see in order to send your mail. She said it took almost four hours.

I think China will be an economic powerhouse in the near future. They do have many “bugs” to work out of thier system.
