Chicago Triathlon (3)

They still don’t have a sponsor and I’m worried they may have to cancel it if they don’t get one soon. My guess is that you need a sponsor’s money to be able to stage this event. Anyone think otherwise?

you don’t think they could put it on with 8000 $160.00 entries, plus all the non-marquee sponsors?

if you look at the site, they still have 25 or so sponsors. I’m not saying you’re wrong, I hope they don’t cancel, but does the namesake sponsor commit enough to make the difference?

Let me first say that I know nothing about what goes on behind the scenes at the Chicago Triathlon. However, in general, the model established for triathlons a while ago was the most if not all of the major expenses for a race are covered by the entry fees. Sponsorship dollars, if any, go towards the cash prize purse, VIP costs, and other extras. Thus, an event could still go on without a title corporate sponsor, if it was set-up in this fashion - there just may not be much of Pro Prize Purse or other extras in place.

Now specifically regarding the Chicago event, I do know that downtown urban events in big cities like this have substantial costs for road closures, various permits, extra police etc . . . that may go above and beyond what is “normal” for other events happening in smaller communities. That could be a tipping point with the Chicago event. I hope not. I attended the event for the first time last year, and I must say, having seen it up close and personal for the first time, it is an impressive event and very well run. The logistics for the event are mind boggling, but they pull it off and do it well. It would be a shame if it was to not happen this year.

The race will happen.

The city is drooling over the 2016 games. The triathlon isn’t going away. A boatload of money is made.

It will probably be the Aon Chicago Triathlon or something like that. Pat Ryan is the retired CEO of Aon and on the Olympic committee.

It’s Chicago…bribes take more time with all these feds hanging around after Blago.
