So the boss and I hate winter here and are thinking of getting a place in FL to pop down to for long weekends or a week or month or some indeterminate amount of time.
I’d like to get a condo in a resort area. Figure we can rent it some depreciate it etc etc. Just in the germination stage.
Anywho I want to get a three bedroom because I want two little breezes. I figure once the breezes are in HS or college they could pop down with some friends and have nice kids weekends with 6 or 8 people (6 in beds two on a sleeper couch).
The boss thinks I’m a crack head for even contemplating letting HS or college kids go alone (HS I can see so I offered we could go but then need a third room for the friends obviously but college I think would be fine). I’m also assuming the breezes will be of moderate intelligence and responsibility.
Anyone have a vacation place they let their kids go to with friends unsupervised? Good or bad outcomes? Am I a crack head?
We let our HS/(nowCollege) aged daughters stay on our boat with friends. They can use our second home in AZ and our cabin for skiing with their friends (these days it’s w their boyfriends). They’ll live on the boat or stay at the cabin for spring break (started in HS) with friends every year.
They’re responsible and take care of our belongings. They’ve been raised feeling like the boat and our properties are theirs as well and they actually get upset if their friends get out of control and/or don’t care for our stuff. Those friends get uninvited.
The boat is complex so they had to learn the systems but they’ll take the dingy out and about and are competent and responsible and manage the systems very well. It’s fun for them and teaches them how to manage others when who aren’t responsible.
Whether or not you’re a crackhead or crazy are separate questions I’ll leave to others. As for your idea - you wanna teach your kids to be responsible then you’ve gotta give them opportunities to be responsible. IMHO.
Given the chance you’ll be impressed how responsible and mature kids can be.

Reading this it doesn’t sound like you have kids yet. I think it’s a great idea to get the place given you live in Chicago. Cross the whole let your older kids go the bridge when you come to it and enjoy the next 18 years down there.
Have a second home in NV (we live up in AK). It is a nice house on a golf course. I have already made the statement that I was never going to let my kids come unsupervised (have 2, daughter is 10, son is 7), however my wife could. Well, she can no longer go unsupervised after she turned off the entire fridge and let A LOT of moose and caribou meat go bad. Fortunately we came back down 2 weeks after she left (for St.G 70.3), so the house only smelled bad…UNTIL YOU OPENED UP THE FREEZER. Was the worst. So, now that she apparently can’t follow simple rules, she is out too. lol
So yeah, you’re a crack head thinking the kids should EVER be allowed unsupervised down there.
