I’m off to the wild, wild, west. Off to Cheyenne, WY (which, somewhat paradoxically, is to the east) for the weekend.
I’m interested in some interesting/scenic/off the beaten track (Hey! you in the back! Stop laughing!) places to run in/around Cheyenne.
I’ll be staying at the Little America (gosh, I hope it’s not a truck stop), and I’d be interested in routes around 3-5 miles, and also 6-8 miles. I’ll have a car, so if you can suggest a place that’s worth driving to, that’s kewl, too. I also have (native) family there, so if you can only suggest to run from the fairgrounds to the bank on the west side of town on the bike path next to the river and back (is my naivete showing?), my cousin and I can decipher that when I get there. I really like trail running, so if that’s whatcha got, bring it on!
A public-access pool with lap swim would be neato too.
Well it has been a while I since I have been that way, but a great place near by is vedauwoo, a climbing area between Cheyenne and Laramie. Great rock formations and trails you could probably run on. Btw, I think Little America is a truck stop. Cheers
I did one of those week long recreational Tours in Wyoming a few years ago. I’m pretty sure we stayed in Cheyenne one night and I did a good climb just outside of town the next day. It turned right off the main road and rolled for a few miles before climbing up to a ski area (maybe). It was a road that eventually turned to dirt, might show up as a dead end on a map. Anyway it was a good climb of several miles, zero traffic. I’m pretty sure it was Cheyenne although there’s a chance it was another Wyoming city.
Seeing the other post I realize I had my “C” Wyoming cities mixed up. I was confusing Cody with Cheyenne. I’ve stayed a good bit in Laramie. Second Vedavu as a neat place to check out. There is a good road “behind” (north) of Vedavu for riding which I think you can ride up to out of Cheyenne. Just looked it up on a map. It is Happy Jack Rd. Vedavu, I believe is in or the same thing as Curt Gowdy State Park, but again, I’m not sure about that. They’re near each other if not the same place.
The other nice riding in the area is to drive over to Laramie and park. Then ride west out of town on Snowy Range Rd (Rt. 130). Starts out flat for maybe 20 miles then starts getting into some rollers before kicking upward in the Snowy Range for a several mile climb up to the top. Unfortunately unless you’re looking for a 100+ mile loop you’ve got to turn around to go back to Laramie. Maybe 70 miles or so round trip.
Go to Vedauvoo, which by car isn’t too far when you consider the speed limits on I-80. About 30 miles to the west. Just slow down when coming back into Cheyenne. You can also go to Curt Gowdy state park which is a little closer. There are some trails around the two lakes. Vedauvoo is really a cool place to see. Don’t be suprised if your a little winded, its about 8,500 feet at Vedauvoo. Do a google search on Vedauvoo.
As for the other responses, I think they we be referring to Laramie and the Snowy mountains to the west is where the ski area is.
An Little America is basically a truck stop on the West side of town. Has a golf course.
