I did some training yesterday riding in the green mountains, about 4 hours total, a little higher elevation, up two gaps. Mainly endurance type riding, focusing on good form, HRZ 1-2, High Z3 -Low Z4 when climbing out of the saddle and during some intervals at HIM race pace. Nothing too out of the ordinary. I would say by nature, I am not a climber but, I live in VT, so I can climb. Last evening and today, I have a lot of chest compression as if there is a heavy force being pressed against my chest during inhales. If I inhale deep and fill my lungs/chest cavity I am very tight and sore resulting a slight shortness of breathe. Like I said, I dont think there was anything out of the ordinary, weather was good, dry at lower elev maybe a little more humid but crisp at higher elev and have trained well up to this point.
Could I have pulled or strained some of the muscles in my chest? Is there any remedies or exercises? Could there be a more serious problem?
Thanks for your thoughts.
Likely an intercostal muscle strain.
But, I’d google spontaneous pneumothorax (primary) just in case - see if it fits, especially if you are a tall, thin dude. If yes, a nice visit to the ED and chest X-ray is in your future …
Good luck!
PM’ed you
