Check your PAYPAL account

they just pulled out $12.95 times 2 out of my checking account!! The user was SKYPE which is apparently their online phone branch. I haven’t used my paypal account since way into last year. of course they have no phone numbers to call so I filed a dispute and expect it will be resolved on the last day.

it just pizzes me off!!!

HA! Well played.

you are in Europe? 'cause it was converted to Euros. I checked with my bank. in order to refund it they would have to close my account! YIKES!

My wifes account was hit for $14.95 paid out in British Pounds but she called PayPal and they hadn’t paid the money out yet and canceled the charge and changed her password. They said this is a huge problem. The crooks are intercepting passwords when people log into PayPal. We’re linked to a credit card so that’s probably another layer of defense vs having them link to your checing account. Close or change your account ASAP.

I’ve been using PayPal since 2001 and have never had a problem.

I just had a problem today trying to pay someone and after logging in it wouldn’t start the transaction… That was a first…

same here, till Monday that is.

Why not just pay by credit card?

This happened to me last weekend. My Hotmail account was hacked and then Paypal. They charged over $500 to Skype. However, before anything was paid by Paypal the charges were refunded. The only issue was the money was taken out of my bank account and put into paypal so I had to manually transfer the money back to my bank.

have you thought about using longer passwords?

thispasswordseemstobeprettystrong!

How did you guess my password? I guess I need to change it to “You’llneverguesscorrectlyagain.”

Just checked mine today and no problem. But I do change my password pretty regularly.

Tell-you-what… I’ll offer this service to you and all Slowtwitchers:

How will you know if your passwords are long/strong/secure enough? I consider myself an expert in online security…

Send me a PM with all your major credit card/banking/investing website usernames and passwords. I’ll evaluate them for you and bill you a small but fair fee.

Thanks,

This is a good point. Even if your Paypal password is secure if someone has access to the email account that it’s linked to then you’re still screwed.

Maybe you forgot that you had two charges to porn sites that you paid through paypal so your wife wouldn’t know?

How? You can’t send money anywhere without putting in a password and PayPal is set up so that browsers cannot remember password for the site.

It is also HTTPS, so your password is encrypted before it ever leaves your computer.

Not sure how people are getting hacked, but it is more likely from phishing or a fake PayPal link.

I pulled a total bonehead maneuver about 2 months ago and didn’t pay attention to what I was doing. I went through updating my info on “PayPal” then after I hit submit something bothered me and I went back to take another look. Turned out I was an idiot and fell for a phishing scam. I called my bank and cancelled my card within 10 minutes and had to wait 10 days for a new one. I also went through and changed my password to all of my accounts which caused chaos because I couldn’t remember the pwords for anything. So far no impact.

I’ve gotten a couple others “from” PayPal that I forward to their fraud department. I got a similar mail from Bank of America and sent it to their fraud department. They always get back to me and let me know the result of their investigation. I’m getting a big kick out of reporting this stuff.

The only links I will follow to PayPal are from eBay. I think that is pretty safe, but I still check the URL and make sure it is always https://www.paypal.com.

Any other time, the only legitimate way to PayPal is to open a fresh browser and type the URL in.

NEVER, Never, ever follow an email link. It is almost guaranteed to go somewhere else.

Oh I know. I was watching TV and had just done a transaction on PP that day so I didn’t pay close attention. Lesson learned.
