Be sure to click on “Map Analyzer” and then select “photo” under the “background” menu in “map settings” menu.
Boom. There is my world- and my run- as viewed from a recon satelite in orbit.
Tom,
I see from your post your using a Garmin GPS unit, but can you tell me what model it is?
Also do you reccomend it?
Thanks
can’t see anything – it’s asking for username/password
Same here, but mine is also asking for ATM code.
Hey, Maybe TOM will give us his username and password and ATM code so we can see his run??
I believe he’s using a Garmin Forerunner 201…according to a previous post.
All the reviews give it a “thumbs up” with the qualifer that the reception can suck at times…
Question Tom - Is there anyway to record particular segments of my “track”. For example…let’s say I did a brick. Can I “record” (am I using the proper terminology?) each separate event? Or…perhaps, on a long bike ride I might do a 40k TT which I would want to know that split… I would want to download these back to PC as totally different. Make sense?
yup, I am using a Garmin 201.
I will change my password so you guys can view it.

-Don’t mess with my stuff guys.
thx tom. that’s really cool. do you know if this is just a US company or do they also do stuff in europe?. what kind of GPS device do you run with? is it heavy? how do you upload the data?
I think the company is in New Zealand- possibly the U.S., not quite certain.
I use the Garmin Forerunner 201. I wear it on my left wrist, exactly like a wristwatch- in place of a wirstwatch. It was a little odd the first time out, but I am used to wearing a larger, dive style watch, so no biggy. I don’t even notice it now. It is amazingly light. For cycling, switch it on and put it in your jersey pocket. Upload the data to your training log and motionbased.com and boom- full info and telemetry including satelite images.
Uploading the dat fro the Garmin Forerunner 201 GPS (or whatever compatible GPS you use) to the motionbased.com website is truly very simple. The only momentary snag I hit was converting my training log files from Garmin’s softwear to a “.xlm” file format. Like a dimwit, I didn;t just click on “file” in the upper toolbar while in the Garmin Forerunner log. There is a file conversion right there. I saved that file to a new desktop folder for these files and then used the “browse” option in the upload tab to get the right file up to motionbased.com. It is a simple process- much easier to do than to explain. It worked perfectly the first time.
I love stuff like this, and no, I don;t sell GPS units (except Timex) and I have no connection with motionbased.com. Another poster on this forum turned me on to it in a thread three days ago.
See all the cool stuff you learn on this forum!?!
yeah, definately cool stuff. but i just checked on motionbased.com and found out that you were right - they only do new zealand and the US :(. bummer. hopefully they’ll get switzerland on there in the future :D.
Huh, uh, yeah… Damn. I dunno. I am certain there is a way to do this. Let me think…
First, With the Forerunner 201 hardware you must go through a brief but mandatory routine to change units when you transition from running to cycling- That is, assuming you want your run data recorded as “pace” (minutes per mile/kilometer) and your cycling data recorded as “speed” (miles/kilometers per hour).
So that is a minor stumbling block as far as units are concerned.
I think there is a way to do it though…
Bummer … doesn’t work for a Mac!
Tom, did you pay for your Garmin?

If you want your run and bike it is best to make it 2 workouts. It makes it easier to view the data by pace for the runs and speed for the bike. Also, the overall data doesn’t average your run and bike together.
perhaps, on a long bike ride I might do a 40k TT which I would want to know that split
You can set the unit up to take lap splits at any interval so you could look at splits for .5k, 1k, 2k or whatever you want.
Very cool. Wow.
Do you know what happend on your run on the 1st. It said you you maxed out at 100mph during your 1172ft ascent. It looks like your running along nicely and then you got on a rocket and went straight up.
Dan
Anyone can set up an account and you can view anyones data. This way Tom doesn’t have to worry about some fool on the board changing his password.
This is hands down one of the coolest uses of GPS I have ever seen! I will now surely end up with one of these Garmin 201’s and start using it for training. I can’t wait to see some analysis of my long rides with this website. Good find Tom! You should ask motionbased.com for some kickback since you have no doubt generated a TON of business for them by posting a demo of their stuff.
That is really cool stuff. GPS is so powerful - even the stuff they let us civilians use. But, I was talking to some pilots who were doing some GPS testing for the military. The GPS the military uses can gauge wing flex in jets.
I have been using the Forerunner for about a year. Love it - although trail running in the summer is tough because of the canopy created by the trees interferes with reception.
that is really cool.
thanks, one more toy to drool over
Pretty cool, but the problem with a GPS watch is that you can’t delude yourself into believing that your runs are longer or that you are running faster than reality.
I was surprised that the data indicates that you were climbing and descending so much. My in-laws live in Dearborn (in a sub SW of Telegraph and Cherry Hill) and it seems very flat to me. Is the GPS just incredibly sensitive to small ups and downs or is your run over a more rolling area of Dearborn? Or, do the numbers just make the run more rolling than it would appear to the untrained eye like mine?
